Fashion as a Medium of Self Expression
“Seek the fashion which truly fits and befits you. You will always be in fashion if you are true to yourself, and only if you are true to yourself. You might, of course, rightly wear that style which is emblazoned on the fashion magazines of the day, or you might not.” -Maya Angelou
Other than fashion, what medium(s) do you choose for self-expression and why?
Coco Chanel stated, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” In a time when self-expression through dress is stifled through dress codes, dressing to impress, and uniforms, a need to stay true to oneself and express moods and emotions in other forms becomes even stronger. Music is multi-faceted and diverse. It allows me with a way to express myself when words fail or when no one is listening. Tolstoy said that, “music is the shorthand of emotion.” Whether I chose to listen to hardcore metal to keep me motivated, hip-hop when I am feeling happy, Jack Johnson when I am mellow, or classical to complete long car drives with, music is always there for me. It also allows me to connect with others. In an era of technology, music is readily accessible and I am always able to find something to suit me. As a musician, who has learned to play a variety of instruments, I have the freedom to also create music to express myself. If we listen closely, music is always around us. It is in the car next to us at a stop light with the window down, it’s in the note written between two people newly in love, and if we listen closely enough it’s in the wind, trees, traffic and silence. The only difference with unwritten music is it is up to us to write the words to fit. If we chose to listen to what’s there we can create a song, a masterpiece that is an original piece that is our heart written on our sleeve willing the universe to listen and look deeper to find out the real definition of me.

The purpose of this essay was to inform and explain to individuals all of the several ways for people to enjoy music as well as to explicate that the readers should strive for a more active type of listening. It showed the impact music can have on the lives of people. Aaron Copland said that even “One note is enough to change the atmosphere of the room” (599). This essay was written for just about everybody, with hearing of course, because most everyone listens to music. Even for the few that do not listen to music often, this could perhaps persuade them to listen to music . This was presented in a creative essay type format. The different types of music and conclusion of this essay are examples of evidence to support the purpose. Copland mentioned “We all listen to music on three separate planes… (1) the sensuous plane, (2) the expressive plane, (3) the sheerly musical plane” (599). Copland also says that the reader should strive for a more active kind of listening regardless of what type of music you listen to (603). However, the author also mentioned that many people who would normally consider themselves qualified music lovers abuse the first plane when listening. This author effectively uses these appeals very effectively with logic. This author used a more objective type of language in his essay. The evidence in this essay supports the claims through practices people experience while listening, writing, or performing music. The evidence covers the perspectives associated with the 3 planes, but nothing else. I felt this article was very well written. I enjoyed the essay, as I was engaged during it. Anyone who listens or performs music can very easily relate to this essay and become engaged into it. The organization of this essay also helps people to be absorbed by this essay. The language throughout this article is not too formal, but not terribly informal. It was the perfect median in which you could read through and easily relate to…

Music often describes one's deepest emotions from the beginning to the end. It may take talent to perform, but there is no talent needed to understand the emotions and stories present throughout a chorus or melody. Sometimes it's hard to talk or properly explain problems to others or even relate to other people who you may trust. Music is always changing like ourselves through time and that is an easy way to relate and discover more about yourself. I have turned to music countless times through either listening or performing a piece depending on my current mood, which is often upset or sad rather than the mask…

Music is supposed to make you feel something. Sadness, amusement, enjoyment, emotional at best; all kinds of melodic vibes flow through the radio stations and air ways throughout our planet and continues beyond our imagination. I grew up in a world full of gorgeous art, visual, auditory, fondness and much refinement. However, music is different for each individual; for some a coping mechanism, but to others an irritant like itch you’re urged to violently scratch. Whether you have a taste for rock n’ roll, oldies, worship music, country, hip hop, punk, you’ll eventually become adapted with the never ending mixture of styles and begin subconsciously performing acts you don’t even realize, like keeping a beat with a tapping foot.…
