Fast Food
Are we taking it too far by blaming fast food restaurants for obesity?
When is it individual responsibility and when is it appropriate to place blame?
Obesity, obesity is a disease caused by a bad diets, genetics, and lack of exercise. It can be avoided by a balanced diet and 30-45 minutes of exercise everyday. Its very different for everybody, some people may have to do more exercise or less exercise, or eat different things due to their genetics. With all that said I feel it’s an individual responsibility to take care of yourself to avoid obesity and I don’t believe it’s the fast foods restaurants fault for obesity. Even top known fast food restaurants like McDonald’s sell salads and include nutrition facts if someone would like to avoid any extra calories or sodium. There is always ways to avoid being obese , its an individual choice whether you go in McDonald’s and get a Spicy McChicken or A McChicken Salad.
According to some research 75 % percent of Americans do not blame fast food restaurants for obesity. They blame it on the lack of exercise. They remaining 25% percent blame it on fast food restaurants because they state that the salads and the healthier choice on the menu are more expensive and make it harder for people with a tighter budget to afford a salad or a healthier choice on the men, but lettuce is sometimes cheaper on the market than meat and other junk food. Even if it takes more time to prepare a salad at home or a healthier dish its still an individual responsibility , if you want to avoid being obese you would do something for yourself. Being obese is a choice and could be avoided with the proper tools.

America’s obesity can be an argument that has many sides to it. The one that is the most straightforward and logical is that us as americans are bringing this upon ourselves. We know the kinds of foods that are good and healthy along with the foods that are bad, fattening, and unhealthy. We try to blame fast food restaurants and grocery stores for serving us foods that are unhealthy. In reality, we know. We try to blame those companies because we don’t want to blame ourselves. As much as we are told what is good and bad for our bodies, we tend to ignore that and keep eating those unhealthy products. America is blaming the fast food industry for obesity, when in reality, it comes down…

Some people disagree that fast food is the cause of obesity and believe the real cause is the parents or blaming others for obesity. Yes, fast food is not the only cause of obesity, however, fast food restaurants are the leading cause of the obesity problem. There are numerous fast food restaurants that offer a variety of foods (e.g., burger, tacos, pizza). These fast food restaurants might have other foods to pick from; however, these foods are made of the same fattening ingredients, which is still obviously unhealthy. Most fast food ingredients contain fattening ingredients: saturated fat, carbohydrates, and more sugar than natural foods that are considered healthy. Because of these less healthy ingredients and the levels of fat and sugar…

If someone is obese, the initial blame is always on the individual. Though the person certainly deserves some of the blame, we often fail to consider social forces such as the proliferation of fast food restaurants, the ease of obtaining inexpensive, packaged food products, and a lifestyle that values convenience over health.…

In “How Junk Food Can End Obesity,” by David H. Freedman, Freedman discusses how fast food restaurants and junk food companies can aid in decreasing the obesity rate in America. Fast food chains provide cheap, quick, and tasty meal and these establishments line just about every major street in America. Because of this, fast food has become the most popular food choice for most people and families. A side effect of this convenience is the growing rate of obesity in not only adults, but children as well. Obesity has been a concern for our society so much so that, that even fast food chains have made small incremental changes to help its consumers without them even knowing. Despite the common notion that…

When people go out to eat at a fast food restaurant often, they begin to think and eat differently than they normally would just eating at home. Jenny Murphy pointed out that, “As American eat out more and more frequently, they become accustomed to those oversized portion, and think that such portions are normal. The high calorie content of these large servings leads to weight gain for regular fast food customers, and obesity can lead to many dangerous health problems.” In this last quote, Jenny Murphy states that regular fast food customers are the ones gaining weight, so maybe if the regular customers stop going there as often it might help them in the long run. People become unaware of the product that they are consuming and it begins to be too much and they begin to feel fuller than they normally would. After doing this for extended periods of time, the mind begins to think that it is not full unless you consume more than you normally would have. Due to this factor, most americans tend to gain…

In my opinion, the food and restaurant industries should not be held liable for the rise of obesity. The reason is as I stated in question 1; the individuals are responsible for their own weight. That means if they have obesity, they would be responsible for that themselves. No one forces them to eat, so that they eat foods they like with their own risk.…

Americans are heavier than ever before and, according to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) approximately 127 million adults in the U.S. are overweight, 60 million adults are obese, and 9 million adults are morbidly obese. Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems. Obesity increases the likelihood of various diseases, particularly heart disease, type 2 diabetes, breathing difficulties during sleep, certain types of cancer, and osteoarthritis. It can be caused by many reasons. One obvious reason is the rise in fast food consumption that companies are so adamant on pushing the public to buy, especially children. With fast food chains creating more and more ways to entice the American public to eat their food, it is becoming harder and harder to stay in shape these days. The fast life of America is quickly taking its toll on the public with the silent enemy called obesity creeping up at an alarming rate. In fact, the rate of it overtaking our lives is so fast; the Surgeon General has called it an "epidemic". Now, the real question is- are fast food restaurants really the culprits at work here? In this essay I intend to compare two very different takes on fast food companies and their ways of making people fat as well as my stand on the matter.…

First of all meal portions are too large. One example is that McDonalds used to have supersized fries and drinks. The super sized fries and drinks had many calories causing one meal to have as many calories as three meals. The second example is that the burgers are so large that they have way too many calories. The burgers are too large therefore causing too many calories, causing more fat. The third example is that there are too many desserts. In fast food restaurants there are many different desserts that many people buy that add even more calories to the massive calories the buyer already gained from their meals. All in all, portions are way too big and fast food restaurants need to cut down their portions in order to stop obesity.…

The convenience of fast food has lead to poor diet choices and ultimately an obese nation. The key word is their choice because people do not have to go out to eat. If people do eat out, they can always choose a salad or something healthy. Alison Motluk, author of the article “Supersize Me”, wrote, “It is tempting to blame fat people for the state they are in. But health officials have recently begun to focus on a different culprit: the so-called 'obesogenic' environment. In the US, goes the argument,…

The fast food industry is a growing industry considering America’s obesity problems. According to the Fast food industry analysis by Franchise Help, there are over 200,000 restaurant locations and revenue has grown at an 8.6% annualized rate. Our economy seems to be going downhill and many Americans don’t want to spend ridiculous amounts of money on fast food, which in return leads to a key survival factor for many of these fast food restaurants, which I will later talk about in further detail. America is finally being struck by the fact that over one-third of adults are obese, so a certain few of them want to take action. Obesity leads to diseases, which then could lead to an easily preventable death. With that in mind, it’s going to cause…

Obesity is the second most preventable cause of death in the United States; however, more than seventy-five percent of the population has been clinically diagnosed with obesity. More than nine million children and teens are overweight and an alarming sixty million adults are obese (Flegal, Carroll, Kit, & Ogden, 2012). There are various reasons why these numbers are so high; most can be traced back to poor dietary choices and lack of exercise. With fast food restaurants supersizing their value meals, many Americans believe it is easier to substitute a more nutritious meal with one of convenience. In Mississippi, which has the highest number of overweight individuals residing in the state, state officials have made it illegal to limit portions of food (Hepburn, 2013). Restaurants such as McDonald’s and Wendy’s are now substituting and/or…
