There are many healthy choices that an individual can choose from when it comes to eating out. But, most individuals cannot get away from fast food for many reasons. Fast food is inexpensive food, “poor nutrition and lack of education about the lack of nutrition in these sorts of food” (Small). Fast food chains are convenient which is why so many people make fast food their go-to but it is unhealthy and cannot benefit an individual. The amount of fattening ingredients in fast food chains is unbelievable and most things that come from fast food restaurants are high in calories. This is one of the main reasons why fast food restaurants are bad, meals that contain high calories are unhealthy for an individual's health. There have been studies that showed new fast food restaurants in poor areas did not curb obesity or improve diets (Chang). Fast food restaurants have a tremendous impact on those who are obese and correlates with each other making it significant to avoid these fast food chains in order to stay healthy or fit. It is important to stay away from fast food restaurants because the food that many of these restaurants are providing are filled with fat and calories that make it very unhealthy. Obesity is a condition of having excess body weight. Today in the USA, 97 million adults are overweight, meaning that 1 out of 3 people we come across in our everyday lives may be obese. However, it is also important to understand that being overweight does not mean one is obese. Many people throw around the word ‘obese’ and are ignorant to the difference of being obese or just simply being overweight. Obesity is having too much body weight, as where people may be overweight due to high levels of muscles or water in their body. In recent times, obesity among Americans has almost doubled, causing the USA to have the highest obesity rate. There are many variables that have contributed to this rapid growth such as fast food restaurants becoming increasingly more available and less expensive, automobiles becoming the number one form of transportation rather than walking or riding a bike, and other factors that promote inactivity such as the use of cell phones, email, etc. We ignore this problem and often look beyond these factors because we consider them “standard” in our lives. Although, before obesity rates spiked, fast food was not as unhealthy or cheap, driving an automobile was only possible for a select few, and technology did not exist like it does now. In order to eliminate such high obesity rates in America I believe we must raise awareness on the damages obesity can have on our well-being. In order to so, there should be a higher emphasis put on healthy living rather than promoting fast food and other habits that are harmful to our health. There are many more solutions to this problem such as raising the price of fast food or making it healthier, but many companies are not willing to make these changes. This is why I believe that it is very important that we make Americans aware of this problem. I would like to research this topic because I find it interesting how in a world as efficient as ours today, we are seeing new issues emerge such as obesity…

Everyone wants to know a reason for the obesity epidemic, and now answers are appearing. Many reasons for this epidemic are due to present day generations, as well as American lifestyles. Fast food has not only come to dominate the American landscape, it has become the most visible American export around the globe (Down to Earth). Cheap and convenient food, busy work lives, and social lives, as well as a constant barrage from media sources have over-loaded Americans are all having a detrimental effect on people’s mental and physical health (Thompson). Due to busy lifestyles and laziness throughout America, people have found it easier to go through a drive-thru rather than take the time to go home and make a healthier meal for themselves. Weight gain and obesity are caused by consuming more calories than the body needs (“Obesity in America”). Genetic determinations, such as the way a body expends energy, hormones, which affect the way that calories are processed, and other organ systems in the body can all affect appetite (“Obesity in America”). Obesity is a disease that takes time to cure, but people will need to have determination to find a cure and also the understanding and knowing the cure will not come fast or easy. Thus, due to all these causes of obesity, America is in an epidemic that needs to be solved sooner than later.…

Walk into any all you can eat restaurant and look around. There are servers busy waiting tables and clearing dishes. There are diners eating and chatting. The smell of cooking food lingers in the air, steam rises from the hot food tables and the chocolate cake on the dessert bar is looking quite tempting. Look a little harder though, particularly at the diners sitting at the tables. Are they looking a little overweight to you? How about the customers just walking through the door behind you, do they look like they could afford to miss a meal? The answer is probably a resounding yes. There are a staggering number of people severely overweight. In America obesity is fast becoming an epidemic, second only to smoking. According to the Centers for Disease Control one-third of adults in the United States are obese and another third are overweight (Freedman, 2011, para. 1). The effects of the nation’s obesity epidemic are immense: taxpayers, businesses, communities, and individuals have spent hundreds of billions of dollars each year because of obesity. This includes an estimated $168 billion in medical costs (CDC). Obesity is the reason that the current generation of youth is predicted to live a shorter life than their parents.…

Within the last few years, obesity has become the number one health risk in America. “For the first time ever, overweight people outnumber average people in America. Doesn't that make overweight the average then? Last month you were fat, now you're average - hey, let's get a pizza!” jokes comedian Jay Leno (Jay Leno Quotes). Although he isn’t quite right with his statement, a large percentage of Americans are at least 30 percent over the ideal weight for a certain height. People are getting fatter and fatter because we don’t exercise as much as we used to. Technology has made it easier to do things so we move less. And with a fast food joint everywhere you look it is hard to pass one buy without grabbing a quick, cheap meal. Fast food restaurants also make you think you are getting more bang for your buck by upgrading to a super size for only $.50 more. Obesity is a problem because it causes many health problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and even strokes. These are all reasons why America is one of the fattest countries in the world.…

Americans are heavier than ever before and, according to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) approximately 127 million adults in the U.S. are overweight, 60 million adults are obese, and 9 million adults are morbidly obese. Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems. Obesity increases the likelihood of various diseases, particularly heart disease, type 2 diabetes, breathing difficulties during sleep, certain types of cancer, and osteoarthritis. It can be caused by many reasons. One obvious reason is the rise in fast food consumption that companies are so adamant on pushing the public to buy, especially children. With fast food chains creating more and more ways to entice the American public to eat their food, it is becoming harder and harder to stay in shape these days. The fast life of America is quickly taking its toll on the public with the silent enemy called obesity creeping up at an alarming rate. In fact, the rate of it overtaking our lives is so fast; the Surgeon General has called it an "epidemic". Now, the real question is- are fast food restaurants really the culprits at work here? In this essay I intend to compare two very different takes on fast food companies and their ways of making people fat as well as my stand on the matter.…

Most students today finish their education without learning how to cook ten simple meals. This depressing statistic is one of the major causes for obesity; if people do not know how to cook a healthy meal, they are much more likely to choose fast food over a healthy alternative. “In the United States, spending on fast food now totals $110 billion annually, having increased 18-fold since 1970. The number of fast food outlets, often started with government subsides, has doubled from 1 per 2,000 residents to 1 in 1,000 since 1980.” Now more than ever it is important to learn to cook, with all of the temptation of fast food it is a lot easier to go down the street to a local McDonalds than prepare a meal. However, if people do not learn how to cook they are destined to contact one of the 30 diet related diseases. The simplest way to fight obesity…

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute says that the increased portion sizes are, “a key factor that is contributing to a potentially devastating increase in obesity among children and adults” (“Larger Portion”). When people do not know what the correct portion sizes are, they tend to have larger amounts of cholesterol, fats, sodium, and calories in their diets. Excess calories lead to health problems and obesity, as The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute puts it: “Larger portions mean more calories, which can easily add up to extra weight” (“Larger Portion”). Americans’ perspectives on portion sizes have changed because restaurants have offered more amounts of food. People are more likely to eat more food if more food is put in front of them. We fall victim to it more often than not. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Children and adolescents who are obese are likely to be obese as adults and are therefore more at risk for adult health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer, and osteoarthritis” (“Childhood Obesity”). Eating the way that we do only makes our health worse. Obesity is one of the leading causes of death in America next to smoking. Spurlock puts it best: “Americans are eating themselves to death” (Spurlock…

Because of the omnipotence of fast food chains in America, when we feel the urge for an easy meal, Americans, in general, immediately look to the fast food nation for a quick suppression to their hunger. Because we live in a time-is-money society the most efficient means of hunger satisfaction is the almighty drive-through. Corporations spend billions of dollars advertising to enhance sales of their products. With American catching on to the lack of healthy food options in the fast food nation, fast food chains began campaigning healthier food such as their salads and fruit cups. However salads may sound healthy but a Southwest Salad with Grilled Chicken from McDonald's has 320 calories and 90 grams of fat. Where's the "healthy" in that. Now that Obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. we need to re-evaluate the importance of healthy eating. By increasing awareness of the obesity epidemic in America we can begin to reverse the trend in weight gain.…
