Fat Granny's House
Fat Granny’s House
Driving down the old dirt road to the house I call my holy place. As we pass up the old white church with chipped painting I start to get excited because I know right around that sharp curve on the right is where my fat granny lives. When we pull up in the rocky driveway and come to a stop, you can see the light brown dirt jump off the ground and disappear into the air. When you get out of the car all you here is hey from everyone who is sitting outside at the old table and staying around the small fire, I shake all my uncle’s hands and give a big hug to all my aunts. And when I see my cousins, the ones that I’m close to always give me a meaningful hug the ones I don’t really see much give me a real awkward hug. You know that kind of hug where you don’t really want to hug them but you have to because there family. When I start to walk up the ramp that leads into the house I start to get anxious with every creak I hear from me taking big steps trying to get up the steep ramp hoping that nothing in the house has changed since last time I been here. I open the screen door and hear it slam behind me with that dying pig sound and watch it bounce a few times back and forth. As I walk into the house I feel that cold breeze that sends chills all up and down my back but as I get father into the house I can hear that loud roar of the heater and everything is warm again. And the house is exactly how it’s suppose to be As the day goes on we walk around the woods and ride our four-wheelers and golf carts up and down the red dirt roads. Everyone is waiting for nightfall to come out so the real fun can start. When it gets completely dark and the only light we have is the moon and one little street light is when the parents start to open their cold beers and when we all get around the warm tall fire and just joke around and talk about memories. My Uncle Scott and Uncle Bubba start up that little black grill and start to fry up some delicious food. After

I looked around and I wasn’t in my room anymore, I was in the hospital during my grandpa’s surgery. The waiting room was cold and sterile and the smell of antiseptic was so strong I could taste it. Waves of uneasiness washed over me as if they were trying to drown me. My grandma and my mother were sitting in the room with me and they looked just as scared. I remembered how long my grandpa was in surgery to get his windpipe removed, how I had thought that I wouldn’t make it through the hours he was and that if he didn’t then I wouldn’t make it for much longer afterward.…

We already ate and drank have of are supplies. Fluffy and I were both cold but I forgot to grab blankets and pillows. I got up and walked up the stairs cautiously. To see if there was any thing happening, but luckily there wasn't. The stand with the blankets was five feet away. I ran over to the blanket stand and grabbed two blanket and two pillows. I was about to turn around when I heard a knock on the door. I thought it was just the wind when I heard it again. It was a chilly day on March 6, 2007. Me and my family were on 495 going to the Holy Cross Hospital with a slight delay of traffic. For some reason, I kept fiddling with my fingers, I was really nervous to see him. We took the exit 31A and we all shifted to the left since it was a sharp turn to the right. My big sister, Maisie, was on my shoulder and we shifted her head fell on my lap. She woke up and asked where we were. “We are almost there Maisie” my Dad said. We stopped at the traffic light and I fiddled with my fingers some more. “Stop fiddling with your fingers!” Maisie whispered to me. In my head, I say “I can’t, he is the first boy of the family, the first! Besides me!” I stopped fiddling and looked at the huge structure in front of me, The Holy Cross Hospital.…

My eyes snap open and the image of a room slowly focuses into my vision. I look around wondering where I am and become aware of a loud shrill noise. Then I remember, this is my place now, this is where I live and that clock needs to stop beeping. Slowly I get out of bed and look into the mirror asking myself the same question as I always do, "Why am I getting up, its not like there is anything for me to do." My room is nothing like I remember it from last night. Last night I had strewn the clothes I was wearing all about the room and sequentially thrashed it by everywhere looking form my pajamas that I somehow never seem to find. Now, my room is all clean. At least the clothes had provided some color to…

My feelings of those weekends use to be that they were boring, yet thinking back now I can feel that those weekends were rich in family tradition and were a lot of fun. We would tell scary stories while we were all gathered around a warm campfire on a crisp night, eating smores after a long day of swimming and fishing in the lake water. Waking up the next morning to the smell of breakfast being cooked by our mothers and grandmother on an open fire pit. Later on we would all gather to play an exciting game of baseball. The smell of the baseball diamond clay, the cheering from my elderly family watching on and the little kids saying that they can’t wait until they were old enough to play. These days truly were wholesome fun that I will never forget.…

We were almost through the state of North Carolina as we traveled on Interstate 95. It was rush hour and you could tell everyone was antsy and excited to get home. Cars traveled at 80 miles per hour, and some were even traveling faster than that. I could now see why it was ranked the fifth worst highway in North America. Cars were weaving in and out of traffic at over 90 miles per hour. Traffic was getting heavy. Listening to the radio, my dad and I sang along to a familiar song we both knew, “Yeah” by Usher. “Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!”, we both sang while he drove. My dad always loved this song, so we had the radio turned almost all the way up. The song ended and we turned the radio down. We had already been on the road for ten hours so we were beginning to get a little tired. It was almost 5:00 in the evening and we did not eat lunch, so we were both getting hungry as well. “Where do you want to stop for dinner?”, I asked him. My dad looked at the food signs next to the highway as I looked up places on my phone where we could grab a bite. Just as I was about to name off a few places where we could go, my phone flew out of my hand and my head jolted forward.…

Everyone gets to the hotel Friday night and gets settled in and reacquainted a lot of hugging, kissing, laughing, and eating. My sister and I get our own hotel room so most of our cousins bring sleeping bags and stay both nights in our room. We talk about what we’ve all done that year, who’s dating who, what kind of cars we’ve bought; we pretty much talk each other’s ears off. The next morning we all get up and find somewhere to eat and walk around town. Downtown Spruce Pine is absolutely beautiful. There are flowers and pine trees growing everywhere, and you can smell all the bakeries and barbeque pits. There are little stores with antiques and instruments, florists, wedding dress shops, and candy stores. It could go from 90 degrees with the sun shining to a humid rain in a matter of minutes. When it rains you can smell it a hundred times better than in California. After we walk through town we get to a huge,…

As I sat on my steps in the front of my house, I could not help but notice how much it had felt like fall. You could smell the rain from the day before from Hurricane Isaac that had finally stopped after raining for a whole day straight. In addition, you could see the leafs changing to its beautiful red, orange and yellow colors and falling off the trees which of course were mostly landing on my car. While I was sitting there in the perfectly shaded area, I was reminded of how much fun being a kid when I saw a few kids chasing each other on their bikes. In addition, while sitting there I could hear many different things that were also going on. I could hear the sound of a hammer from my neighbors working hard, as they continued putting yellow siding up on their house. I could also hear dogs barking along with the sound of my other neighbor across the street mowing their lawn, which was green and brown from the hot summer we had. Along with all of that, at the end of my street I could see a loving mother comforting her child that was crying because he fell.…

There’s an overwhelming sense of fear. It is as if there were eyes watching me. I begin to get out of the bed. I’m going to open the closet but I don’t want to. I know something bad is going to happen. But I open the door and there’s nothing, but it’s too dark to actually see anything. I lean further into the closet. It’s colder in the closet than in the room. I feel a hand pull my hand off the knob and drag me further in. I fall and I keep falling. I don’t stop falling till I wake up, and it gets colder as I fall. I feel my blood freeze in my veins. It's like the dream’s…

    An Abandoned House

It was a hot, summer's day as I walked on the dirt road with only silence along my side. As I continued on the road I discovered it led to an old abandoned house. I couldn't help but stop for a few minutes and look at the details of the huge, strange shaped house. I noticed that it had been a long time since anybody even took a look at the house. The old house was left to die, alone, with no one to care. The paint was peeling, the windows were broken and the shingles had been torn from the roof, probably by past storms. What caught my eye was that the unkempt yard, it looked like it hadn’t been cut since the house was abandoned, the grass was almost my height and there was nothing but weeds everywhere. I imagined this house would’ve probably been huge and gorgeous in its days. It had three full stories. The fourth floor had an attic where you could sit and see the sunset on the horizon. The house also had a huge porch with large white columns making a fence to support the balcony. The columns were full of dirt; they looked less white and more brownish-black. As I slowly continued to walk past the house, I could hear the wind whistling through the broken windows. I could see the leftovers of the curtains moving gently in the breeze and the grass swishing left and right in the wind. As I was giving the house a final look I thought I saw a silhouette of somebody beside the window gazing upon me so I started to walk a little bit faster. As I walked I wondered how much longer this house could stand up to the rain and wind before it surrendered itself to nature or would people destroy it and replace it. Maybe it would just be left alone there and would continue standing quietly with its dark, window eyes begging for mercy.…

Opening the door slightly, I was greeted with a thick wall of darkness. Peering out into the inky blackness of the passageway, I tried to clam myself down to go down to the kitchen to grab some candles to light up the house. I finally felt ready to go down , as if I was fighting a war with the darkness. As I opened the door, the door seemed to come alive, making a creak sound, warning me not to go out of this room. Biting my lip, I groped around the black darkness. I quickly made my way towards the staircase. Just moments ago, I was still waving goodbye towards my parents when they went to their friends wedding party.…
