Father Son Relationships In The Kite Runner By Khaled Hosseini

Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a relationship with their father, but those who are able to appreciate the special, and unique bond shared between a father and son. In the novel The Kite Runner author Khaled Hosseini uses the characters to display the different aspects of the relationships between father and son. Father/son relationships are unique and in The Kite Runner, it is no different. Khaled Hosseini uses The Kite Runner to display different aspects of the relationships between father and son. In the beginning, the relationship between Amir and his father Baba is the most talked about. Like most young men Amir admires his Baba, “He motioned to me to hold to his hat for him and I was glad to, because everyone would see that he was my father, my Baba.”( P.16) He strives for his fathers acceptance and approval though he rarely feels as though he has attained it. Amir makes several attempts to try and please his father.( most importantly the ass raping part, end of Amir’s childhood)TENSION, losing life long friend Ali and illegitimate child Hassan caused some resentment of Amir from Baba. “But the truth of it was, I always felt like Baba hated me a little. He felt as though Hassan was his true son and preferred him, if not out loud, to Amir. Hassan showed traits of athleticism and bravery contrary to Amir. Unfortunately for Amir “Children aren’t coloring books. You don’t get to fill them with your favorite colors” as his friend Rahim Kawhn points out on page twenty-three. Baba felt so guilty about having sex with Ali’s wife, that he even noticeably favoured Hassan over Amir, although not intentionally. Baba did not show displays of affection for either son very often, so even the slightest gesture had a lot behind it,“Baba was there, watching, and he patted Hassan on the back. Even put his arm around his shoulder.”
