Fed Up: The Obesity Epidemic
The film Fed Up, written and directed by Stephanie Soechtig, is a documentary that describes the worldwide epidemic of obesity, which is endangering our children and shortening their lives today. Ultimately, through this film, Soechtig tries to convey that the Americans’ increased sugar consumption is what is responsible for this epidemic. It is being consumed in various forms, from pure cane sugar to high fructose corn syrup and ingredients that we are unfamiliar with. According to Soechtig, the food industry is the real culprit as they continue to produce and market processed foods that contain high percentages of sugar to the public.

Instead of removing the problem, the fatty, sugary processed foods, from the aisles of our grocery stores they have introduced many “diet,” “low-fat” and other alternative foods. People think that these low fat foods are healthier, same-tasting alternatives for junk food. However, in reality, the industry has doubled the amount of sugar that goes into the production of these foods, which makes our bodies produce fat. As stated in the film, “less” or “reduced” fat or “diet” does not make the junk foods any healthier than the regular junk foods. As a result, Americans are not getting any thinner or healthier and continue to stand at the same place they started.
The industry’s ultimate response to the criticism and threats (to its profits) it has received has been exercise. “You do not need to change what you eat, simply exercise” is basically what
