Field experience is vital to the professional social work experience for numerous reasons ranging all the way from teaching future social workers how to manage their time through showing what exactly social works do. First, Field Experience helps BSW students to understand who exactly social workers are. Next, Field Experience helps future social workers to understand the many different roles that social workers fill. Finally, Field experience helps upcoming social workers to make the personal decision of if social work is the correct profession for them.
Field experience helps forthcoming social workers to learn exactly who social workers are and what they do. Social workers fit into many different capacities in society as a whole, so they range from being a public servant to being an advocate to being a change agent and finally to being a facilitator. If a student works in the
government, they will get to see what it exactly means to be a public servant, thus they will learn how to take care of the needs of their clients or make a change in public policy. Next, as an advocate, the student can learn just how exactly it feels to be a voice for your client or how to give your clients hope. Third, the student will learn how to be a change agent, meaning they will learn how to address issues of social injustice and write grants for needed services. Finally, during this field experience, student can learn how to be a facilitator, where as they will learn how to work with communities and be a liaison.
Lastly, field experience is vital to the professional social work experience, because it helps future social workers to make the personal decision of if social work is the correct profession for them.
With having to look and act the part of a social worker, students can have the real life experience of working in the practice setting, thus they are better adept to know if social work is the field they desire or if it is not the profession for them. On the other hand, if students decide to continue in the social work program, it helps students to begin to know how to self-care for themselves, as well as how to eat and sleep in the correct increments, so that they are successful. Next, it helps the students to better understand what the management and discipline is like in social work. Third, it helps the students to get practice and build a reputation in social work. Finally, the field educational experience helps the students to know how committed to social work they are, in addition to knowing how competent they
are.
In a nutshell, the field experience is vital to the profession of social work, since it helps students to understand what the specific and diverse roles of social workers are, in addition to what jobs social workers perform. Next, it helps students to determine if they want to go further in social work. Finally, it helps the students who do want to go further in social work, by aiding them in building their future lives with regards to their career. For an impending social worker, the field experience is both metamorphic and petagogic.
