According to Amnews.com (2009) “Emergency department clinicians are obliged to confront a remarkably depressing fact of American life, namely, the existence each night of approximately 700,000 Americans who have no place to sleep, whose indignities are legion, and whose needs may not fit the typical definition of medical care” (p. 2). In part due to deficient access to other regular sources of outpatient medical care or nonmedical sustenance needs; homeless individuals are more likely than others to use emergency department services. In the United States, a homeless person is defined as an individual with a disabling condition that has been homeless for at least one year. Homeless people are a part of a vulnerable population who face a very real risk of developing health issues at a rate higher than the rest of the population due to certain disadvantages and co-morbidities. The homeless population is often exposed to the harsh elements of the weather and lack access to basic necessities such as food, shelter, clothing, and medication. Housing in shelters and transitional homes are not constant and reliable, leaving the homeless population no choice but to spend their days and nights out in the streets. A vulnerable population is defined as those who are at a higher risk than others of developing health issues due to their social status, personal finances, lack of access to resources, or personal characteristics such as age,…
As a group, we challenged group bias by discussing the homeless research we had previously encountered. We had all came across viral internet videos of homeless people who were just in the business of loitering and collecting free money for drugs or other unhealthy activities. We became hesitant and unsure if we wanted to help the homeless community because of the negative stereotype. But, Chris brought up a very strong point he said “Well at the end of the day it doesn't matter because no human being deserves to be out in the cold without proper layering. We just will choose not give money instead give them resources that will make a difference in the long term”…
Homeless people all around the world are starving and nobody is doing anything about it. Homelessness is defined as a person who "lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate night-time residence." (Cite)They are starving because of the poverty in the world, the whole world's population as we know it, and community's pretending not to see it happening . Poverty is a big thing that affects homelessness in the U.S (cite) . The population increases every day and that makes the world more populated and creates more homeless people. The community pretends that they do not see people and just let them die right in their faces Worldwide, homelessness is caused by a breakdown in traditional family support systems, continued urbanization, the effects of structural adjustment programs, civil wars, and natural disasters. As I walked around my city to feed the homeless, I chose to go to the first neighborhood I’ve lived in out of several. As I was taking in the nostalgic scenery, I motioned towards a man who took shelter behind a dumpster. Not wanting to startle him, I kindly greeted and offered him one of the many pb&j’s I had prepared earlier.…
I believe that historians would benefit from the use of interviews when studying the living conditions of homeless individuals in our country. Even though homeless people may still possess the technology to be able to make their stories public through social media, they most likely do not possess the means for those stories to gain enough traction to raise the awareness needed for change to occur. Oral history appears to be beneficial to any group of people who are not in a socioeconomic position for their perspectives to be recognized without it. Conducting interviews is easier and more cost and time efficient than attempting to write novels on particular subjects.…
Crisis happens to everyone and depending on the severity; it has the potential to render individuals and families without the resources to overcome adversities, which can result in homelessness at any given time. The homeless population lives at the edge of poverty often losing connections with family, neighborhoods, and friends. They face a stigma inflicted by society, which often leads to them being isolated and/or rejected. This paper will examine the meaning of homelessness, multiple perspectives on the issue, what is currently being initiated in the field of social work, and explore ideas on possible solutions.…
The Rosemary Heights Senior Village is not really a great place to volunteer, for the view inside is overwhelming compared to the outside. A couple of steps in and I could already see the blue dressed nurses performing their daily afternoon duties and the brown dressed nurses serving…
