Personal Narrative: My Journey To The Homeless
As I walked around my city to feed the homeless, I chose to go to the first neighborhood I’ve lived in out of several. As I was taking in the nostalgic scenery, I motioned towards a man who took shelter behind a dumpster. Not wanting to startle him, I kindly greeted and offered him one of the many pb&j’s I had prepared earlier. “I don’t want your disgusting sandwich, I’d rather eat Mcdonalds,” he said harshly, assuming I was helping him out of pity and not the kindness of my heart. This wasn’t the first time I’ve helped people who didn’t want to be helped. In fact, this hopeless mindset was influenced by the crime, poverty, and drugs within my community. For decades, generations have idealized that the only way to survive is to steal and harm those who get in your way. This was evident in the many times people have burglarized my home and threatened to take my life. Despite all this, I was always aware that this was not the way I wanted to live my life as I couldn’t even harm a fly. From the start, I, myself was an example of this hopeless mindset which had held me back academically, but it had never weaken my hardworking and …show more content…
To reach this ladder of success, I‘ve developed my own methods of survival through peace, love, and positivity. Unlike that homeless man who survives on his own, I persevere through helping others who lost their hope or are simply driven by the fear of working hard. On my free time, I motivate younger classmen with this message with the intention of leading them down a pathway unlike those who make up our despairing community. My change of perspective opened up many doors which allowed me to become a role model and a captain of my cross country team. Although my community has affected my academics and home situations profoundly, I now have the strive on bettering my future and experience on how it feels to fail but not give

Some of these people are submissive to what people say; others try to break their mold in society and overcome the societal oppression that they face. On a cold, brisk snowy night in New York City little did I know I was about to make an encounter with someone I'd never forget. I was waiting for a friend in McDonald's so she could get her food and stay inside for warmth, when I realized someone not too far behind me was talking. Startled, I turned around I saw a homeless man wrapped in torn up blankets, shaggy, undone brown hair and trying to keep warm like the rest of us. My first instinct was to stay clear until a woman had drooped her purse and money rolled around his feet, as he bent down to retrieve the money to all our disbelief he handed her the money and told her something extraordinary. As he handed the woman back her money with shaky hands, he looked down and exclaimed how,"Money…

It’s no fun being homeless. Everyday, I wake up, I am forced to spend another meaningless morning roaming around without a purpose, and another meaningless afternoon fighting for a spot in a shelter. Some days are better than others. Like on days that I make it to a decent shelter, I am blessed with an abundant amount of food, access to clean water, a warm bed that hasn’t been used, and a story from the book of life, aka, the bible. Life is good on those days, and no amount of rejection from the streets can take away my smile when I’m inside a place full of love.…

We also educated them in various topics such as teach them English daily use sentences and basic economics in term of how to saving. The reason that I choose to teach them how to saving is I found that their family financial status is not good, so it is necessary for them to use money correctly and make sure that they will not overspending.…

The service that I did with the poor was at St. Vincent De Paul. I took the bus with a friend after school on a random Thursday with Ms. Reuter driving the bus, which I didn’t expect her to know how to do at all. It was my first time working there, because I had only worked at the distribution center the year before for confirmation. When we arrived we all signed in and they put the people who had been there before in their normal locations. My friend and I got split up, with me in charge of sorting all of the donated canned foods and my friend went over to move pallets around. While I was working with one of the staff there, I made friends with some freshmen that were also working with me. They started calling me silly names like “broth boy” because at some point I got in charge of sorting canned broths.…

Im sitting in the back office at Dollar General on my lunch break at work and it is far removed from the rest of the store and it is completely silent, on the desk immediately to the right through the door is our CCTV monitor. I like to watch the people as if it were a show because it is never the same. On this particular day two homeless teenagers walked in and having encountered them earlier that day I knew that they smelled like they haven’t showered in months. They were coming in to buy cigarettes but the younger one was not eighteen and the older one was, so He bought them, and they did this twice before entering for the last time that day. The moment I looked out the window of the car and my eyes turned to the row of homeless people weaving its way through the traffic begging for money, I jumped out of my seat. It was my first visit to India after leaving the country for the United States. The homeless people's’ hands were making weird gestures and thumping the windows of the honking cars. I could not digest what I was seeing! While reaching out to an old woman to give her some money, I thought about what non homeless people could do to help those without a home and basic needs. Then, I asked myself a question. Why not give them something that will be with them forever and help them out of their poverty and teach them valuable skills? After all, a mountain of…
