The children in this school have various of different medical diagnoses such as Down syndrome, Rhett’s Syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, seizure disorder, and other complex developmental disabilities.

The role of my supervising OT is to help children with complex developmental disabilities improve their independence in daily living skills and help them become successful within their learning environment. Some of the task the therapist engaged in was group meetings, providing the students with direct and group therapy sessions, and helping staff bring the student into the café for lunch time. The group meetings consisted of all her fellow colleagues such as the principal, social worker, nurses, teachers, physical therapist, and speech therapist. During the meeting they discussed any concerns they had about specific students and how they could try to improve them. Specifically, when addressing intellectual disabilities, a plethora of training options are available, language training, socialization training, self-care skills training and academic skills training would all be potential tools to deal with singular and comorbid disorders. (Pg. 411- 412) Moreover, I would understand that I was part of a problem solving, collaborative team. A team comprised of my child, myself/spouse, physicians, mental health practitioners and educators. I would understand that a good working consensus would be paramount to the success and potential of my child's outcome. That educating family, friends and neighbors to marginalize or eliminate stigma, fears and ignorance would be of the utmost importance. Lastly, I would never cease to see my child's potential and to treat them as a whole complex living being rather than a series of clinical…

The client groups at my current place of work are adults with autism, learning disabilities and some of the residents have a dual diagnosis of mental health issues as well. Both the social and medical model has an impact on their daily life. The home empowers the residents and enables them to lead a normal positive life where possible. We do this by providing and engaging them in their own individualized care plans and asking their opinions on what they like how they like things and allowing them to make informed choices for themselves and whether they have the capacity to make these decisions.…

This dream of mine took root when I had to cater for a nephew who suffers from autism. This situation brought me to the grim realization that the practice of dealing with and caring for special-needs individuals requires a multi-disciplinary approach that encompasses the expertise of all individuals involved but principally placing the health of the patient in to the right well-trained hands.…

This report indicates a significant amount of positive changes in the lives of those diagnosed, especially when health care professionals are able to re-arrange the environment to suit the interests of the child. This re-arrangement results in increased social interaction, specifically when a child is presented with a problem that requires solving (496). Similar results were found in studies by Dawson and Galpert (1990) and by Greenspan and Wieder (1997), as increasing social interactions were reported as a result of occupational therapy. These strategies specific to occupational therapy take on a very different approach from physical therapy and communicational therapy approaches as the occupational therapist creates a “natural play scenario” (496). The patient imitates the interaction and the therapist then follows the child’s move, resulting in positively increased social interactions, and leading to overall behavioural adaptations (492, 496).…

Occupational Therapy is a field that most people associate with Physical Therapy. However, these are two different fields. Physical therapy deals with helping a client to rehabilitate an injury like a torn ACL or a broken arm. Occupational therapy, on the other hand, is a form of treatment that facilitates the use of everyday activities. In most cases, occupational therapists work with people who have physical disabilities as well as some who have mental disabilities. “Common occupational therapy interventions include helping children with disabilities to participate fully in school and social situations, helping people recovering from injury to regain skills, and providing supports for older adults experiencing physical and cognitive changes (About Occupational Therapy). These tasks that these professionals do may also be used to help a client to learn a new way of living if they are in a life changing situation. They also help clients to be able to participate in learning situations as well as social. Therefore, as an occupational therapist, I will be working with kids using and working on their fine-motor development in order to help them succeed in the classroom as well as other aspects of their daily…

The assembly at the International Research Conference for Nursing Students (IRCoNS) is, indeed, a mind opening opportunity for all of us student nurses especially to us, 3rd year students, who are now in the phase of doing research projects. Though it is not our first time to do a research, this time around we are more challenged to do well in our research paper and come with a better research output. The topics that have been discussed in the conference had enabled us to become more knowledgeable about nature of research. Nonetheless, the conference had not only provided us the knowledge about the nature of research but it had also allowed us to see the importance of research in the nursing profession. Likewise, conference had brought us encouragement in conducting our research and it had actually motivated me to try doing researches regarding health care in the future.…
