Fear of betrayal is “the nagging feeling that our friends and loved ones can’t be trusted, for example, can’t be trusted not to lie to us, not to laugh at us behind our backs, or in the case of romantic partners, not to cheat on us by dating others”(Tyson,16). I see this core issue with his members of fight club. In the movie the leader of the members isn’t really the protagonists character, it’s Tylers. Why is this? I think because of the protagonists’ fear of betrayal he does not allow himself to become close to the members; that’s why it is Tyler who makes the stronger bond between him and the other members of “Fight club”. Then there was the incident with the protagonist and one of the members who he fought; but the protagonist beat this man up so badly that they had to bring him to the hospital. This happened only after Tyler grabbed this man’s face in a sense of approval; the protagonist saw this and you can see in his face he was jealous. In the beginning you see him as what our society expects. Then you see him completely indulging himself in the world of fight club, leaving behind societies beliefs and views. Until the end where he literally had to risk his own life to be able to take control his life again. Obviously this is an exaggerated experience, but this is real life scenario. We all go thru it growing up trying to be what society wants us to be or expects us to be. But some of us hit that rebellious state or peer pressure gets the best of us. It is something that everyone has to go thru because in the end it determines the person that you are and will become. Like the ending of the movie is great because you see him grab Marlas’ hand that shows us he is over his fear of intimacy and then all the buildings blown up and go down which is almost symbolic of clearing the way for the protagonist to start his
