CONTEMPORARY VS RENNEISANCE

From historical Renaissance aspect, the nude figure in art has always been represented as innocent and pure, as well sensual and sexual. Therefore contrasting to the contemporary point of view, whereas the nude is often a mirror reflecting the darkest parts in society through dehumanization, distortion and repulsion. Religion in society was quite superstitious back in the 1400’s and the artists beliefs in God where very strong and faithful, therefore reflecting in the artwork as a whole.
Ever since the introduction of feminist movement into the world of figure in art, several woman artists have taken part in the deconstruction and dehumanization of the women nature or beauty, and appropriating the delicate bodies to the way they are portrayed in the current society. Contrasting to the religious aspects of art during the time period of the renaissance, Contemporary artists such as Jenny Saville have participated in sending out messages of the need to re-appropriate the female body, which has been conquered over time by the language of the old historical version of beauty and purity.
Many artists such as Michelangelo Buonarroti produced their nude artworks while under the directions from the people of the Catholic Church. In fact, many Renaissance artists have had barely any say over where or how they would produce their artworks, the artists were instead valued for their accuracy and technique. Unlike the Renaissance artists, Contemporary artists on the other hand took complete control over what they produced and were commonly labelled as the break-free from the traditional soft textured artwork of the renaissance.
