Film Analysis: An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge
In the 7th grade I had a crush on my history – geography teacher, Ms. Nail. She was in her early to mid twenties with jet black hair, slim and attractive, I thought she was Jackie Kennedy's sister. As I languished in the classroom staring at her every move like a mannequin, far too infatuated with her, and less interested in class assignments, she would call me out for not completing them on time. When she was lecturing about the French Revolution I was envisioning the two us at the Eiffel tower, she was my queen as I laid my cape down for her – only to snap back to reality as she exclaimed “David, are you with us? Or are you in some far away place again?” “Oh, if she only knew!” I recall one evening when I was at the grocery store …show more content…
The following week in class, Ms. Nail had us watch a film titled, “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.” The plot was about a Confederate soldier sentenced to hang for being a traitor. Just as his execution was about to take place, Ms. Nail stopped the movie and gave us an assignment – we were to write how we thought the story should end. I wrote that the soldier was dreaming about his true love and the fact that he could not have her was akin to dying, to live without her was as painful as death. I received an A on my assignment – one of the few A's I ever got in her class, with the exception of a written report on the “The History and People of France.“ The following year I started 8th grade, and my infatuation with Ms. Nail ended. I never saw her at school again and assumed she had moved away-for me it was on to high school, college, I had pretty much forgotten her over the years. However, one night a few weeks ago, I was watching an old rerun of “The Twilight Zone.” The episode was “An Occurrence at Owl Creek

"An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" or "A Dead Man's Dream" is a short story by American author Ambrose Bierce. Originally published by The San Francisco Examiner in 1890, it was first collected in Bierce's 1891 book Tales of Soldiers and Civilians. The story, which is set during the Civil War, is famous for its irregular time sequence and twist ending. Bierce's abandonment of strict linear narration in favor of the internal mind of the protagonist is considered an early example of experimentation with stream of consciousness.[1] It is Bierce's most anthologized story.[2]…

In “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge,” the main character Peyton Farquhar is condemned for death, standing with noose around his neck waiting to be dropped off a bridge to a brutal death by a group of Union soldiers that had obviously captured him. The story flashes back to the events prior to his execution, as well as moving forward from his execution to his seemingly real escape. In the end, it is revealed that his escape was a figment of his imagination before he died.…

    Dear Azaire

Let’s switch roles Azaire, at least try to imagine a miniscule part of what I’m going through. How would you feel if everywhere you looked, blood of soldiers were dispersed through the air, as they were pulverized from the blasts. Men around me begging for death, in slow, silent chants. Anticipating every moment in case the earth falls in and crushes you, leaving you to witness a slow and painful death. Looking up at the last ‘beautiful’ scenery, is the sky of metal artillery, before waiting for what could be your last moments of in the trenches, this is what you should be living, you out of all men deserve this. Having every freedom as a man you decided to abuse, a pure woman, is it her fault she cannot conceive. Every part of me misses her Azaire; i turn numb when I think of her, within this state and place she is always in my mind, my only motivation. This is a letter to you to fathom what real love consists of. Everything I yearn for is, Isabelle. You have mere significance to a vulture, having seen many of them peck away at the dead corpses on the battlefield so shrewdly, there is also darkness to your soul, but you could be capable to love. This is what you failed to express to Isabelle. Still reminiscing over the first time her beauty caught me, she was there in front of me her strawberry chestnut hair, caught and held up off her face so elegantly, she wore a white lace blouse with a dark red stone which met at her throat. Her eyes glistened; there was so much beneath the…

We didn't hang out much over the summer, we didn't have a way to talk, me doing summer orchestra and you doing summer gym. We were locker partners though, and we would write letters to each other constantly. We'd leave them in the locker and we'd giggle as we left them and then ran on to our next…

During the summer of last year I worked at an ice cream shop named Cold Stone Creamery nearby where I live. I made a few good friends there and one of which was a girl named Molly. She had been working at that particular shop for almost 2 years. Her ice cream mixing skills were impeccable and no one was able to make a faster batch of ice cream cakes than she could. She was extremely kind but a little quiet and it was often difficult for her to express herself because she was always so worried she would offend someone. Regardless, she got along with everyone in the store.…

She was from the poverty stricken neighborhoods of Trenton and was really looking forward to coming to my school for our annual carnival we held. She had seen me try to draw a butterfly on a child’s face and came over, tapped my shoulder sweetly, and proceeded to show me an easier and beautiful way to draw a butterfly. That day she helped me draw many things I did not know of and in turn I showed her how to handcraft her own bracelet. Till this day I use her technique to help me achieve flawless looking butterflies and other drawings.…
