In the film 'Schindlers List' directed by Steven Spielberg an important idea raised is that one man can make a difference. The main character Oskar Schindler is first presented as a selfish profiteer of war but dramatically changes his morals and beliefs when he witnesses the mass burning scene towards the end of the film.
Spielberg used a range of camera shots to change the mood by bringing excitement or horror to the audience. At the start of the film we see Oskar Schindler in a high angle shot examining the evacuation of the Krakow Ghetto, this camera shot was used to show his power and wealth which contrasted to the panicking Jews below him. Also in this scene Schindler notices a girl dressed in a red coat carelessly roaming through the terrified Jews. Spielberg made her coat red so she stood out amongst the documentary like black and white film and so the audience would see her as having a significant role in the film which she did as she stood for the future of innocence. The girl in the red coat is again shown in the mass burning scene where she has been murdered because of her Jewish religion and is lying dead in a wheelbarrow being sent to be burned along with thousands of other Jewish corpses. This was the Germans attempt to erase the entire Jewish race with no evidence left. The girl is shown in a pan shot which creates suspense and worry as it is fast paced and the audience has made an emotional connection to her. For Oskar, she symbolized the future for Jews. This made him realise his harsh stereotypic nature towards the Jews was getting him nowhere and he needed to change. His new beliefs and morals pushed him to sacrifice the fortune he had made off the Jews to save the lives of eleven hundred of his factory workers. The quote
