Film Summary And Film Analysis: Food, Inc.
The documentary Food, Inc was created to show viewers what is being put on their plates and has given me an altered view towards the food industry which has drastically changed my food habits. Many emotional scenes were shown on this film to give viewers empathy towards the problem that is occurring. The documentary shows many vivid details and explains what is in the food that consumers eat. The film food, Inc influenced my habits of consumption by eating organic meats, purchasing most foods in the farmers market, and checking for food labels. I have learned that there is a big difference in organic and non-organic meats. Animals raised organically are not allowed to be fed antibiotics or other drugs and cannot eat genetically modified foods. Eating organic meats is not only helping animals but also preventing the consumer from a possible disease outbreak that may occur due to the mistreatment of animals. The meat comes from a sustainable farm that uses the manure productively as organic fertilizer. The manure is “pure,” coming from animals fed an organic diet which ensures consumers that there will not be any exposure to chemicals. When purchasing meat from an organic farm stand at a farmer’s market, consumers support that farm. On the other hand, buying non-organic meat that isn’t local, free-range, or ranch-raised from a supermarket chain will most likely support a multinational food corporation. After the experience change in some of the famers’ supermarkets, I also started realizing the foods tasted better and after eating, I felt lighter and full at the same time.     Food, Inc. accomplishes exposing an, almost, forced monopolization of food providers through strong artistic imagery, revealing the health risks of eating processed foods, and through testimonies of the victims directly affected by this. There is a stroke of brilliance from Robert Kenner, the creator of the revelatory documentary, Food, Inc.. Kenner is no “newbie” to the film world with 9 previous works he has written and directed, most of which are documentaries created to raise awareness to specific, world changing issues.     The film, Food, Inc., argues that our food system has been corrupted by corporate interests; as a result, we are put in danger by very items that should guarantee our survival. We should reclaim our right to health by eating more locally produced organic food and ensuring all people have access to such food. The film wants the viewers to think negatively of the business of mass production of the foods that we eat on a daily basis. The logical fallacies allow the film to capture the attention and emotions of its audience by giving a reason for their concerns, but without any legitimate statistics or facts to back up their claims.     They aren’t better tasting, nor do they have anymore health benefits than nonorganics. Organics do tend to use fewer pesticides, though they do still use them, and pesticide related health risks are not nearly as imperative when compared to other problems out there. Depending on yields and how much farmers are using conservation tillage practices that traditional farmers are already using, there is a chance that organic farming could possibly be somewhat better for the environment. We should all keep one thing in mind: organic foods just cost more. The absurdity here is that the food police have made food into a “status-seeking game” while at the same time wondering why exactly the poor don’t consume enough nutritious food. Even teachers at our kids’ schools find places in their schedules to bring up eating organic, buying local, and recycling.     Industrial farming often uses many harmful pesticides to process large amounts of food, but it also poisons the food in the process: “There certainly is a justifiable concern that some chemicals have increased toxicity and are potentially harmful” (Fuhrman 300). In this manner, I find it to be a healthier dietary choice to avoid these harmful chemicals in my food, which I can typically find at a pesticide free organic farm in the local area. I often purchase my groceries at food co-ops and other health food stores in the local area. Also, I will only buy “free-range” meat, which explicitly defines that the animals I am eating have been raised, processed, and slaughtered at local farms. Free-range animals also tend to be grass fed, which reduces contamination of meat that is often produced by corn-fed industrial meat producers. The documentary first illustrations a supermarket filled with different food items. As the camera focuses on the fruits and vegetable the speaker states “The tomatoes you buy in the grocery store are picked when green and then ripened with ethylene gas.” The process of food production has changed in the eyes of many, over the years.
