Well focusing on educating firefighters on how to work effectively in a diverse environment helps a department prevent discrimination and promote inclusiveness. There is evidence that managing a diverse work force well can contribute to increased productivity. All I know is when someone needs medical attention or when a building goes up in flames, people do not care about the race or the sex of the firefighters who drag them to safety, or who keeps them stable long enough before they go to the hospital. Competence is all that matters. That said, it does not mean race should be ignored. I guess what I am trying to say is by having a more diverse department; you make the department stronger, and depending on the area you work, it creates more of a connection with your community. Diversity will always be a challenge in the 21st century, but we do not have to let it be. It is up to the new leaders to face challenges when introducing or addressing diversity, but their success is critical to the success of the
