Flowers For Algernon Summary
Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes is about a man named Charlie Gordon, who is a 37 year old man who is mentally challenged. He is like a man trapped inside of a child’s body. Mean, I know, but true. All Charlie wants is to be smart. That’s his big wish. He doesn’t want to be good looking or famous. He just wants to become smart. One day Charlie might get the chance to make his dream come true. Along the way, Charlie might discover that being smart is amazing, but that isn’t everything.
Charlie goes to a school only for people like him. He is taught by Miss Kinnian. All of the other mentally challenged people like Miss Kinnian a lot, but Charlie loves Miss Kinnian. He loves her more than a teacher, but he knows that they will be nothing more than friends. After school he goes to the factory to work. At the factory, all the guys pick on Charlie because they think it’s funny. Charlie, on the other hand, doesn’t get that they are making fun of him, he thinks they are his

He kept getting lost. As soon as the doctors heard about it they knew it was only a matter of time before this would happen to Charlie. Soon enough Algernon was an average mouse. Not dumber but certainly not any smarter. When Charlie started to fade away, he couldn’t spell, speak or read foreign languages, and he couldn’t solve math problems anymore. Once again, he was a 37 year old man who is mentally challenged. I think Charlie learned that being smart is helpful and an amazing feeling, but being too smart isn’t the best thing to be. Charlie also learned that people love you for who you are and that you don’t need to be smart to be loved or needed or anything. The last thing Charlie learned was people who treat you badly or make fun of you, they are not your friends at all. I learned the same things such as that people who care about me and don’t make fun of me are my friends. The same great lessons on how to go through

He eventually convinces himself of feeling indifference even to Alice Kinnian, the only one person, whom has never betrayed Charlie and the only one, for whom he has maintained a deep affection throughout the life. And Algernon is the sole Charlie’s faithful companion, whom he shows concern for and treats as equal sentient being. Obviously, Charlie is the personification of Algernon to a certain extent. To begin with, when Charlie is smart everyone avoids him and acts almost scared of him. For example, people are avoiding Charlie he “guess[s] it’ll take a little time for them to get used to the changes in me. Everybody seems to be frightened of me.” Charlie really wants to be smart to fit in but in the process everyone avoids him. Along with people avoiding him, when he is smart everyone begins to see that Algernon is getting hostile and it foreshadows what will happen to Charlie. For example,“they’re all pretending that Algernon’s behavior is not necessarily significant for me. He lost his job, he realized how dumb he was before, and he severed good relationships (not to mention it wore off, possibly leaving him dead too). In the story it said, “Algernon died 2 days ago.” This quote is strongly hinting that Charlie will probably die too, because Charlie and Algernon underwent the same experimental operation to synthetically enhance intelligence by almost 3 times the patient’s original IQ. Obviously, dying doesn’t do much good to a person’s life. Some people could say “it gave Charlie a glimpse of what normal people see!” but what good is a glimpse when you can’t even comprehend what you experienced a few weeks ago?…

Laurie was unable to accept the importance of respect. He went through a difficult time adjusting to a new environment. Laurie decided that misbehaving in school would bring him the attention that he desired. Yet, the alarming manner of Laurie’s personality made him more antagonizing. Prior to kindergarten, Laurie never attended school, which created a more challenging situation. He had multiple consequences for the mistakes he conveyed. Over time he became tired of the punishments. This resulted in the fact that Laurie was the newest teacher’s helper. Over a week Charles “handed things out and picked things up” (348). The teacher was extremely amazed at his act of kindness, she rewarded him with an apple. His respectfulness did not continue for long, until Charles’ daily routine returned to normal. He pronounced inappropriate words and had his mouth washed out with soap. A few days after, Laurie’s mother was present in the PTA meeting. She glanced around trying to find another mother that held the identity of Charles. She was unable to find a woman that appeared to be apologetic and haggard. At the end of the meeting, Laurie’s mother identified her son’s kindergarten teacher. She was anxious to begin discussing about one of her students.
