In a small town in North Carolina, the United States Marine Corps combat force is training for an upcoming combat mission to Iraq. With the Marine Corps standard of not allowing service members to shop outside of the military base while in uniform, several service members are faced with a dilemma. The options of finding a nutritious meal are limited to local takeout or the not so nutritious military meals ready to eat (Survival Acres, 2014). As a solution to the problem, a young Marine Sergeant pulls out the business flyer he received in the mail from a local business. The flyer provided a solution to many of the Marine’s meal problems. The business was offering to pick up meals from any local dining establishment while only charging a small fee that was close to what a tip would be at many of those establishments. In 1894 some schools in Philadelphia began to offer what was known as penny lunches, which began food services within schools, thanks to local charities. Living in the heart of the western American mountains, meat plays a big role in the generic lifestyle. Many families obtain their meats through recreational hunting, and fishing. Turning twelve in our community means that, you can now get your hunting license and go out with dad every weekend starting in September. It is safe to say that more than the majority of the families that live within the Bitterroot Valley consume a high percentage of meat, every day, for nutritional benefits as well as personal preference. It is the generic ‘western American’ thing to do, sit down with the family on a Sunday afternoon, say grace and eat a burger. There is no doubt that poverty is an issue in America; according to Feeding America, 13.5% of Americans are considered impoverished (Hunger in America). The class of people known as the “working poor” often get the brunt of this inequality, since many of them work at minimum wage jobs, such as in fast food restaurants. However, these jobs are not always horrible, usually due to the companies and the CEOs behind them. Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks Coffee Company, has created great improvements for the workers at the coffee chain, even creating a program to pay for baristas’ college education. The state of school lunches has been a point of debate for many since Michelle Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act signed into law December of 2010, giving full authority to the USDA in setting the nutritional standards for all foods regularly sold in school lunch lines, stores, and vending machines. The law was set to provide additional funding to meet the updated standards, however, the cost was severely underestimated. Using data provided by Medicaid, eligibility for the free or reduced school lunch programs has seen a definite increase, although participation has not (Lee, 2010). Junk food. Do any of us know the meaning of the term? Do the consequences of developing lethal diseases not concern us? Apparently, today's society is well aware of what it is, (food with a low nutrition value and is usually processed or ready-prepared (Junk Food)) and what it can do, yet they prefer not to have truth repeatedly slapped in their face by the media. The way I see it, that's exactly what these individuals are asking for. They say diets are productive, but it's based off of self-encouragement which can only take you so far. According to an article composed by William Dietz, Obesity is a matter of personal responsibility. Poor dietary decisions cost individuals the expansion of their waist lines. What many do not realize is that as they continue to visit fast food restaurants for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, they develop an addiction.
