Footloose: Play Critique
Critique

The play I am writing about is called Footloose. It was preformed at the Country Day School Pavillion. I saw this play on Saturday, April 14, 2012. Footloose is about a teenaged boy and his single mother moving to a small town in which the law states that there can be no singing or dancing of any sort. There was a terrible accident that had happened five years ago which involved the priests son in a car crash. The priest blames song and dance, therefore banning it in that town. The teenaged boy, the priests rebellious daughter and a few of their friends set out to legalize singing and dancing once more. The story worked very well and flowed nicely. It was interesting, not exactly knowing what would come next and there was also some comedy mixed in. I very much liked the actual script. I thought the actors were very well rehearsed and sung very well. A few times someone said a line a little to fast but otherwise everything was very believable. They all had microphones on so they were nice and loud but whoever was controlling the microphones could have used a little more practice because their voices would cut in and out and the audio person would turn the wrong person’s microphone on. They all had great choreography and gestures. The set was excellent. It was hand painted and fit the story very well. They also set the mood of a scene very nicely by using lights and sound effects. The music was very catchy and interesting. The costumes were very good as well, they fit the time period of the play perfectly. The audience was very well behaved. They laughed and clapped all at the right times. They were all very interested and engaged in the play. I think the show in general was one of the best school plays I’ve seen. It was funny, dramatic and all together well put together. I would happily recommend anyone of any age to go see this play because it had some mature humor along with some silly laughs. I look forward to the next

As soon as I entered the theatre, it was completely packed. I also saw many people from different age groups; this gave me a feeling that the show would be entertaining enough to get people from all ages to come and see the show. The environment of the theatre was very formal, as there was a red and gold layout and it was also very clean.…

The acting in this play was great. The actor I was looking most forward to was Brooke Shields. Honestly don’t think that she was that great. It could have just been the character of Morticia, but after it was all over I felt like she stood out the least. To be fare it could have just been that she was having a bad night though because when she was handing out autographs after the play she apologized for not doing well. The other star, Roger Rees, was pretty good. He definitely was not my favorite part of the show, but he did a good job playing Gomez. He was somewhat dry, but he had enough to keep him memorable. Adam Riegler was the young boy who played Pugsley. He did an outstanding job and unfortunately wasn’t a huge part of the show. I would have liked it if they had involved him in a few more scenes. The best part of the show was definitely Rachel Potter in the role of Wednesday. She blew everyone else out of the water in terms of her acting and singing. She was the true star of the show in my opinion. The way she acted really made the audience want things to work for her and the character Lucas. The actors Heide Blickenstaff and Adam Grupper did a good job in the role of Lucas’ parents. I feel that they did there job in being good character foils to Gomez and Morticia. Jesse Swenson was another actor that I thought did great. He played Wednesdays love interest Lucas. He did a fantastic job and was almost as good as Rachel Potter. Another role which I was disappointed in was Brad Oscar…

The setting was good and I have to admit the actors were outstanding! Every character was extremely well played with a good batch of confidence. Made me feel like they really had been through all of it. Gregory Burke has made an informative, entertaining and provoking play not to forget. Al parts in equal measure. Fantastic. Above all, the scene I enjoyed the most, was the one where Cammy practically gets changed. The viewer gets taken in the hand and brought through a whole lot of previous wars. That was truthfully amazing scenery work.…

The set was well made and fit the time period quite nicely, but I could not help but feel it could have used a few more props to give the audience a better sense of immersion. It was often hard to tell where the scene was, or if the characters had changed scenes or not. Using more props would also give more distinction between events and places, making the overall scenes more memorable. One of the strongest points in the play was the costumes. They all were extraordinarily well made, and looked authentic. Some of the notable mentions are Prince Pedro’s uniform, the watchmen’s uniforms, and all the costumes in the ball scene. The costumes helped the audience remember which characters are which, and make the play more memorable.…

Lane Tech College Preparatory has chosen to do a play on The Laramie Project, a non-fiction story of discrimination upon homosexual and the hate crime of Matthew Shepard’s murder in 1998. The story takes place in Laramie, Wyoming, based on hundred of interviews afterward the murder, and re-enacts in chronology of the murder. It truly is a really serious and important subject to touch upon but, Lane Tech failed to show it to its full extend and beauty the production could have been. The sound system was horrible during the performance. Finance seemed to be a problem; the costumes for example were pitiful. Last but not least…

There were some things that I didn’t like about the play. One of the characters portrayed a rebellious girl who wore dark clothes and heavy makeup. She was the one who was hooking up with the professor and her friend. She kept blinking her eyes too much and moving her head to try to look as if she was being seductive. I understand that in order to portray a seductive character some of those gestures would work well. I think the actor over did it, and I found it distracting to watch her keep doing the robotic gestures even when…

The lighting for the show was well done. The spotlights on the performers were not too bright and made it so that they could be seen better while singing and acting. The coloring of the lights on some scenes kept the mood appropriate and made it feel like it was day or night. All of the props used were very well done and were painted beautifully. The backdrops and the things like the tree and door really made the show believable and immersive. The catwalk for the balcony and the fireplace was also very well done. All of the costumes in the musical were stunning. From Cinderella’s servant clothes, her ball dress, the fairy godmother’s pink, sparkly dress, and all of the townspeople’s clothes, all were beautiful and added a sense of time period. Finally, the sound for the show was good but could have been better. A few times the orchestra was louder than the singers and it was difficult to hear their voice shine through. The actors’ microphones could have been a little louder at times, but most of the times I could hear them well. In summary, the atmosphere of the show was kept very appropriate throughout the show.…

    Melva Play Monologue

There were many scenes where you could feel the tension between certain characters, or when one would feel pity for another character. These overall, made the play great in that aspect. On a scale of one to ten, I would give this a 7.5. The reason why I gave it this score was because I felt that there were some scenes that required a bit more clarification, also, the play seems to lack detail for the scene, costume, and prop designers. However, there seemed to be a lot of moments where lighting to create a mood was involved, if this were to be produced I feel that the lighting designers would have a simpler time producing that sort of lighting. Thus, if this play was to be produced, I would probably not watch it because it did not really make an impression on me nor did I find it particular drawing. Perhaps I would have seen it if I didn’t read the script first because I would have been able to see how a scene designers would have handled the constant scene changes or how a prop and costume designers would fill in the gasps that were not provided in the…

I don’t know too much about acting but from my experience I think the actors did a great job. I didn’t see any actors try to over play the part. One of the actors went to my high school, and he did a great job. The play had a great humor, I felt like I was laughing the whole time. I thought all of the actors had great singing voices. The one thing I didn’t like were the puppets. I was too distracted by the actors so I never really looked at the puppets.…

In November 2011 my group and I performed a devised piece entitled ‘Unrequited Love’. The theme of our piece was conflict, young people in love but with different aims in life. As well as the couple’s conflict we had two other characters who wanted to be loved but had to be underhanded to get it! Finally to add even more chaos we had the interfering parents! Our piece was inspired by the genre Commedia Dell ‘Arte but we also incorporated spoof and parody. Our performance style was very physical and melodramatic. I worked with my group to devise and direct the piece but I also acted as two characters in the play. We had…

The play I am going to critique is the “Voice of Turtles” on October 16th in South Carolina, Myrtle Beach. This play was very well put together and the actors were especially good throughout the play. I have never seen to a full production play before and it was very exciting to see a Broadway type play. It was hosted in a huge auditorium that had hundreds of seats and of course they were all full. It was a great experience and I hope to see it again one day.…

The set and staging in this performance was used very effectively. The stage was a proscenium style stage, with the main part of the plot being performed inside the stage with small sections of audience addressed dialogue and monologue in front of the stage. This was a good use of staging because the audience could easily differentiate between the different parts of the play. Set changes were very slick which helped keep the pace of the story up without hindering the performance in any way. In the opening scene in the pub, boards were used to shrink the stage into a smaller area; this had the effect of making it feel cosy and jolly. The boards opened up to the audience inviting us into pub life, we could see dancing, singing and card games, and this all gave the impression of a good atmosphere. When the Duke entered all of the peasants rushed upstage and huddled together whilst the Duke and his henchmen were downstage on a small raised platform.…

In overall performance, like I said, they delivered it very well. All characters do their best to make their audience not to bore and to have students learned in what they act. The last dancers, were so very good and excellent, they dance very well and they look serious in what they doing. They are also in one dance, they are uniformed. They practice their dance very well.…
