For Our Grandmothers
The poem “For Our Grandmothers” by Nickole Brown, explains how Brown's grandmother shows her affection towards her granddaughter like most grandmothers. She makes us realize how our grandmothers are always there for us and how they help us grow. Grandmothers show their love in many different ways that we may not realize. Grandmothers have a way of easing our lives to put less pressure on ourselves and also making their children's lives easier for their children. She describes poetically all the loving things they do for us. One literary device used in this poem is alliteration. Alliteration is when a sound of a word is repeated. In the poem “For Our Grandmothers” by Nickole Brown, she says, “who counted, counted, and recounted”(2). Alliteration …show more content…
I pay more attention to this technique because I hear it a couple of times which makes it more effective. The use of enjambment in this poem keeps you concentrated because the sentences just flow naturally. This makes me want to keep reading more and see what the next line is going to be about. Sometimes when i read poems i zone out but Brown's usage of enjambment keeps you lured in. I can relate to this poem in a few ways because she talked about something that everyone's grandmother does in one way or another. One way it related to me is when she talked about her grandmother cooling the hot coffee. My grandmother does that for me when I am in a rush, she cools the coffee so I can drink it faster without wasting time for it too cool down. Brown also mentions her grandmother hiding her light bill money and that made me remember my grandmother. My grandmother stored her money in a closet and whenever I needed money for lunch as a kid she would always provide me with it. This poem is very powerful because it made me think of all the things my grandmother does from me. Brown showed in this poem all the things her grandmother did for her which expressed the love the grandmother had for her granddaughter. It makes you realize how much your grandmother loves you and their forms of showing

    Mare's War

Any normal grandmother would visit you with open arms, chocolate chip cookies, and comment on how amazing you look. However, in Mare’s War, by Tanita Davis, Mare is not your average grandma (unless you consider normal grandmas to wear auburn wigs, stiletto heels, and padded push up bras). Therefore, Mares granddaughters, Octavia and Tali, are dreading to accompany their 80 year old grandmother on a road trip across the country. As the three travel further into their journey, they begin to build a closer relationship and understand Mare’s past. Mare’s War was written in a particular fashion to express two different point of views. One is in the past representing Mare’s perspective, while the other is given from her 15 year-old granddaughter Octavia, during the present. Ultimately, both sides represent the struggle of equality: Mare’s battle of racism in the past, and Tali’s judgemental thoughts of her sister, today.…

In ‘Brothers’ the use of enjambment is still apparent throughout the poem. In the first stanza we see the possibly the main use of enjambment to show the continuation of the Brothers to the bus stop and therefore show the continuation of the relationship, However the enjambment is broke further on in the poem with the use of a full stop; ’Bus fare.’ The break of the enjambment here is viewed significantly as the continuation has stopped along with the boy who ‘froze’ and realised he had forgot his bus fare. However the enjambment used in ‘Brothers’ makes it appear as a ‘story’ and the breaking of the enjambment acts as the breaking of the continuation of a book when everything stops flowing properly.…

The author expresses the theme by showing how the young teen feels the exact opposite with her grandma to the way she feels around her family. The girl connects with her grandma. The grandma represents great loss. She represents great loss because the grandma was the only person that gave her a sense of hope. The grandma must die so the girl can let go of her resentment and rebirth her new accepting self.…

At the beginning of the poem, they both have a typical relationship. An example is, “Abuelito who throws coins like rain and ask who loves him.” Doing such an action obviously is a way to earn the granddaughters' love. As the poem progresses, Abuelito is getting older and becoming more and more ill. The granddaughter seems ignorant as to how grave this is turning out to be, as she simply says that "[he] can't come out to play" and "[he] sleeps in his room all night and day. When someone is sick, the best remedy is sleep. The theme is describing in the finally line of the poem, as though the granddaughter is trying to get as many memories out as they can before their grandfather and the relationship the granddaughter has with him is lost. This is supported by, “is blankets and spoons and big brown shoes / who snores up and down up and down up and down again”. Overall, nothing will last forever, and in the end you have to decide what you are going to…

The poem has a very happy tone to it at the beginning. The child says “Mother Dear, may I go downtown instead of out to play, and march the streets of Birmingham in a freedom march today?”(Lines 1-4) Obviously her daughter wants to do something her mother doesn’t approve of her doing. So her mother say “No, baby, no you may not go” (Line 5) She thinks that it’s a bad idea for a little child going downtown. So that’s when a little argument start not big but her mom say no and rather she goes to church. After she dresses her up the poem turns into a tragedy because when her mother left she had a smile and it was the last smile she would have in her face. Sadly there was a terrible explosion.…

Duffy’s overall tone throughout the poem has a very nostalgic feel as she looks back on her mother’s previous life. In stanza three the poet looks back at one of her childhood memories, “I remember my hands in those high-healed red shoes.” Here Duffy looks back fondly on her past to when her mother was alive. It shows how much the poet admires her mother as the memory is such a small one, but must have meant a lot to her. In stanza two her tone is quite light-hearted as she refers back to her mothers teenage years. “Your ma stands at the close with a hidden for a late one.” This shows her mothers relationship with her mum and how her life wasn’t as perfect as it seemed to be as she also had a rebellious side to her. At the beginning of stanza four Duffy shows an admiring tone towards the things her mother once taught her. “Cha cha cha! You’d teach me the steps on the way home from mass.”…

This poem makes me think of my favorite book called The Perks Of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. It is the story of a boy named Charlie and his not-so-average life. The story is written as letters to someone he has never met, but heard was a good shoulder to lean on. This book is my favorite because I can really relate to Charlie. Speaking of Charlie, that is my puppy's name. He is a chihuahua and dachshund mix. He is my best friend and is always at my side. He is probably the coolest puppy ever, except at three in the morning when he is sitting outside my door whining, then he can be someone else's best friend. This poem is probably one of my new favorites because it actually made me feel something and that is really important to me when reading. I really enjoy how the poet talks about words people never use because I have an extensive vocabulary, but rarely use any of the words I know because most people I know would not understand me at all. The reason I am so educated in words reminds me of my grandmother, who is one of the most intelligent people I know. When I was about six or seven, she would say words to me that no Kindergartner knows and I was expected to spell them. Most of the time, I was pretty close and when I got it right, she would tell me what the words meant. At that age, I was more interested in the taste of my boogers than in learning boring words I never thought would matter. Looking back, I cannot thank her enough for that small effort to help me in life. I am sure without her, I would be using words like "ain't" and phrases such as "don't got no" instead of knowing how to speak like a civilized human being. my grandma is awesome, and as soon as Meya (my daughter) starts school, I plan to use this same technique on her to ensure she grows up to make something of herself. Might as well end this with things about Meya. She is the most beautiful child, and she is so intelligent, it is…

Reading this poem brings back memories from my early child. I remember being ten or eleven and going to daddy daughter dances at the community center. When they discuss the Whiskey on his breath, I remember smelling the grease on my father. He was never one to drink, which is something I find very respectable; but he worked in a GM factory so he smelled often smelled of grease. This became a comforting smell since as a child I always associate with my father. Dancing at these dances was never easy since my father is a bigger man. His belly often made our dancing difficult, but I was always dancing since I would just stand on his toes as he held my hand. This made my dancing easier than the romping around that the father and son do in the poem.…

I found this poem to be very emotionally moving because it tells of our story as African Americans in this country. The mother begins by telling her son that life for her aint been no crystal stair, it has had tacks in it, splinters, boards torn up, places where there haven’t been any carpet and bare. The beginning stanza of the poem serves as a reminder of the plight of African Americans here in America. Life for us has truly not been a crystal stair, we have certainly experienced a great deal or hardship as a people from the first time our feet touched these shores. This poem speaks of us being stolen from our homeland, and being sold into slavery. It speaks of us being placed in cages on the beach, as we awaited the slave ships to come and whisk us away from to uncertainty. It tells of the horror that we faced in the cage, and the fact that the cage still has the odor from us being packed in there like sardines to this very day.…

A simile she used in the poem was in the third stanza, where she says “ Just like moons and like suns, With certainty of tides. Just like hopes springing high, Still I’ll rise.” What I interpreted her saying was, no matter how low she may be, or even be at rock bottom she still will come back to the top. I liked how she used the moon and the sun as an example, just for the sole reason everyone knows how the suns rises and sets everyday. I personally like this stanza the best just because of her optimism. It really shows how she has courage in herself. I’m sure everyone can connect to this stanza.…
