John's reason for not being a holy man (which was a big deal for the time) can be traced to 2 things. 1: Him being a farmer makes his life revolve around the randomness of the weather and the brutality of nature. 2: The corruptness of the religious members of the town. An example is all of the witch accusations that are completely ridiculous and the priest asking the townspeople for money instead of preaching god.…

During the first class of second week, we are recommended to attend for a book talk called Forbidden City, USA. It is a name for a nightclub, which located in the Chinatown, San Francisco. Arthur Dong, the author of the book attended this book talk to present his discoveries after immersing himself in collecting hundreds of evidences (images and objects) of that era over these thirty years. Forbidden City, USA captures various personal stories from the entertainers who worked in the nightclubs. Their experiences and aspirations are truly worth to be recorded and published as a book; it is priceless. Not surprisingly, people who came to this talk was mostly the older generations, they might come from the same era and are interested to know more stories that they did not go through, just like what I have thought. Before the talk, I have never been introduced any cultures about the Chinatown nightclubs, even though I am a Chinese. Thus, I am glad that I made a decision to come over with my study partner and got the chance to explore more Chinese cultures and their journey.…

John's battle is intensified by a flimsy, broken home environment. Developing up in the family portrayed by his sibling, Augustan Burroughs, in the top of the line running with Scissors, John's troubles are compounded by misuse and disregard. John depicts in clear detail the "tricks" he designed as an issue, that were conceived from the outrage that developed inside him from years of dismissal and disappointment. Some of these, indeed, were not kidding law violations that could have brought about wrecking outcomes. Pretty much as Holden Caulfield hollers, "Rest tight, ya boneheads!"…

In the beginning of the novel, John talks about how he keeps switching churches throughout his life. He also mentions, “I became rather vague in my religion” (1.1). John’s disappointment in religion is shown by him switching churches and being uncertain in his religion. His disappointment in religion also shows during Christmas vacation of 1961 when Owen and him are practicing their special move in the gym with the janitor keeping track of their time. John is arguing with Owen about him thinking he is God’s instrument when he says, “for someone your age, and of your education, to go around thinking he’s God’s instrument!” (7.338). John disappointment in religion shows as he remarks at Owen thinking himself to be God’s instrument. John’s reaction gives the idea that he thinks that there is no such thing as God’s…
