Forensic Chemist Career Essay

In order to have any chance in pursuing a career as a Forensic Chemist (Criminalistics Trace), I’m going to have to undergo a large amount of studies, starting with a bachelor’s degree in a science of my choosing and ending with a master’s degree in forensic science. At Michigan State, there is a Forensic Science program that will allow me to specialize in Forensic Chemistry, or trace evidence, which is what Criminalists deal with in their daily life. However, this program is extremely competitive so to be safe I would need to maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher. This area of study specializes with trace evidence including paint, fibers, drug, and explosive evidence. I would also be spending lots of time in a lab, getting “field experience” and completing an 18-month research
Another option, if I choose, is I would be able to take extra classes in Forensic Anthropology/Biology to further broaden my knowledge, and my job opportunities. Going this route and putting a little more time in, could have tremendous effect on my future. Even taking an introductory course such as CJ 825 (DNA Profiling) could edge out the competition and land myself a job as a Criminalistic. One of the main things that sets MSU aside for other schools in the Forensic Science area is the fact the MSU joins forces with a nearby Michigan State Police Forensic Science Division, giving students access to their state-of-the-art lab equipment. Also, the partnerships allows students to apply for internships in which they won’t have to travel. The MSU Forensic Science Master’s program would be highly beneficial to my future, if I choose a career as a Criminalist, and would help to guide me in my studies up until my first
