Winter! The name itself gives shivers to our body & thoughts of cold days and icy roads. In the essay ‘Thoughts of winter’ by Victoria Santiago, she says that winter is the season that receives most attention from us through our scientific explanations, our mythological ideas and our personal determination. Clearly, from the essay we can find out all related ideas, its nice organization and good development, and also personal touch with good narration.
Scientific explanations of winter are often found in comparison to summer, spring or fall. “Winter is caused by the tilt of the earth in relation to the sun”. (Santiago 2008). The oblique angle of earth to sun causes the same amount of solar radiation to spread over a larger area. There are lots of myths about winter in every different part of the world. The best known myth according to Santiago is Greek one that explains the origins of winter and its association with death and rebirth. Also there are some psychological effects on people’s behaviour in winter. Many people experience seasonal affective disorder (SAD), and the symptoms include excessive sleep, fatigue, depression, and physical aches. (Santiago 2008). In winter we have to pay extra effort towards our daily routine. But winter is also a season to explore ourselves through skiing, snowboarding etc. There is more to winter than freezing cold. (Santiago 2008). Although there are many problems in winter but winter brings out best qualities. As Canadians, we are not defeated by winter. (Santiago 2008).
