Act one, scene two is a flashback to an earlier time in the attic. The Franks and Van Daans are forced to hide because they are Jewish. The two families live together in the attic of Mr. Frank’s business. Fear and lack of privacy causes problems between the Franks and Van Daans. Miep and Mr. Kraler bring the two families food and news/advice. Anne is beginning to dislike her mother’s bossiness and she starts to have a crush on Peter Van Dann. Anne and Peter are still studying and flirting with each other. But Peter is a little awkward around Anne who is very confident and mature. Conflicts between the two families in the cramped attic get worse. Mr. Kraler brings the two families supplies. He also brings Mr. Dussel, a Jewish man who needs a place to hide. Mr. Dussel rooms with Anne and he tells them about Jewish people getting arrested all over Denmark. Anne’s best friend, Jopie, got arrested. Mr. Dussel and Anne do not get along because Anne is free-spirited and Mr. Dussel is strict.
Act one, scene four takes place several months later. Anne has a bad nightmare about the Green Police. Anne rejects her mother’s love and asks for her father. Then Anne realizes that she is being mean to her mother but she can’t help it. The war is getting worse.
Act one, scene five is during Hanukkah. Anne gives everyone a nice present. Peter is clumsy and fell off of the chair. Then the two families hear a noise downstairs and they are scared that somebody knows where they are
