The Great Depression started in 1929 and lasted ten years. It was the longest deterioration of the economy in history of the industrialized world of the West. Nearly half of the country’s banks had failed and about fifteen million Americans were unemployed by 1933. When Roosevelt took office, he came up with program called “The New Deal”. Designed to lessen and get rid the problems of the Great Depression, the New Deal branched into three parts. Taking immediate action to stop the worsening of the situation was the first part. Then, using short term efforts in order to fix the problem, and preventing the Great Depression from ever occurring again were the second and third parts to the New Deal. An example of a New Deal program was the CCC. According to Kelly. (2016, May 21), “The Civilian Conservation Corps was …show more content…
created in 1933 by Franklin D. Roosevelt to combat unemployment. This work relief program had the desired effect and provided jobs for many Americans during the Great Depression.” Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal helped the economy and the unemployed, thus helping Americans get out of the Great Depression. World War II came right after the Great Depression.
WWII started when Britain, Russia, and the United States tried to stop Nazi Germany’s conquest for the domination of Europe in 1939. Right before going into the war, Franklin Roosevelt united the entire country. He pulled everyone together to get them to focus all the resources of the country on winning the war. Due to the fact that Roosevelt was a big fighter of anti-corruption, a commission was set up to watch over profits of the war and cost overruns. According to Gibson. (2012, February 4) Franklin Roosevelt, “began the rearmament and he stood up strongly against the Axis powers. He had a twin policy of preparedness and aid to the Allied coalition.” Franklin Roosevelt’s involvement in WWII helped Americans get through the
war. One of Franklin Roosevelt’s biggest accomplishments as a president was the fact that he gave people hope. Due to fact that Roosevelt became the president in such a dark time, most of the people of the country were discouraged and very down. Starting in March of 1933, Franklin Roosevelt did a series of 30 radio broadcasts called the “Fireside Chats.” “With his Fireside Chats, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt used the power of radio to speak directly and intimately to the American people through some of the darkest periods of the Nation's history.” Otrcat.com. (n.d.). The people of the United States found comfort in these broadcasts and regained their confidence. Franklin D. Roosevelt was a great president. He not only was the legitimate commander in chief during WWII, he took charge of the country’s industrial power. He also played a very important role in setting up the United Nations and people the hope that they needed.
