Free Will In Ayn Rand's Anthem
Is a perfect society ever going to happen in the future? Is it a good idea? Ayn Rand, the author of the novel Anthem, believes that everyone should get along and demonstrate a perfect society. Ayn Rand believes that everyone should be the same and no one should have an ego. In this dystopian novel, Rand doesn’t want anyone to be different, or see what they look like. Throughout the novel, Rand shows that each person's feelings, choices, and needs are more important than everyone else’s, when an individual does not believe that the laws of society are ethical or moral then he or she has the right to defy the laws, and also Rand believes that happiness is the purpose of life. Once he runs away and fins the many diverse qualities of the new house he finds, he is finally jubilant. For his time era, Equality was an aborigine because no one has disregarded the rules that he has known of. Once Equality is freed from the society, he finally achieves happiness and feels as if his life finally has meaning. When Equality was still living in his society, he wasn't happy with the laws and rules that everyone had to follow. “My happiness is not the means to any end. It is the end. It is its own goal. It is its own purpose” (Rand 95). This explains that Equality is only happy when he runs away and is living in the Uncharted Forest with The Golden One. “For this they were not liked in the home of the students, as it is not proper to smile without reason” (Rand 29). This explains that his presence aggravated the House of Scholars because they assumed that Equality was thinking he was better than them, and that he had no business thinking of these things because he is a Street Sweeper. Rand agrees that happiness is the purpose of life in Anthem, because everyone is told to do the same thing everyday, besides Equality. Equality is astound to that “The Golden One” achieves happiness when she runs away and follows him into the forest to live
