The purpose of this essay is to describe an analysis of the film “Freedom Writers” in regards to the breadth area of Social/Civic. The film “Freedom Writers” is based on the area of Long Beach, CA, was released in early 2007, and directed by Richard LaGravenese. The film is about a young teacher who inspired her class of at-risk students to learn tolerance, apply themselves, and pursue education beyond high school (IMDB, n.d.). The film expresses the lives of students in the early to mid-1990s who went through strife to ultimately graduate and move on to higher education and rewarding careers (Freedom Writers Foundation, 2016).

There may be a poor city/country in Africa, which have occurrences of violence that hinder a youth’s ability to learn or causes a distraction. There can be motivational people in their life, especially a teacher, who can encourage them and help motivate them to success. For most of us who have the privilege of going to a decent school and not having to deal with the outside distractions, it is a great movie to put into perspective and think about those students who are in that situation. Understanding that this is not something that just happened around Long Beach, CA, but is something that has happened in the past or will happen in the future in another part of the country and/or world. Realizing that students all around the world go through different struggles in their growing up and learning years, that can perhaps hinder their learning capabilities in school, is something that I have reflected upon when watching the film and when writing this paper. It makes me feel grateful for the opportunities I have had in my life in school and motivates me to work harder with the abilities I have, to take advantage of the opportunities in learning that I have, knowing that the hard work will pay off, and understanding that there may be those less fortunate in the world who do not have the same opportunity. The film was inspiring to know that just one person, specifically a teacher, can make a large impact on students’ lives, and can help motivate and encourage them to the best of their educational
