First of all, the French were influenced by Enlightenment ideas and also the American Revolution because they wanted change. The French wanted to be free from the rule of absolute monarchy. As described in document 7, the French wanted change, whether or not violence had to be used. As Jules Michelet said, “They have made justice a negative thing, which forbids, prohibits, excludes an obstacle to impede, and a knife to slaughter.” The French also wanted freedom from the 3 estates. They were tired of having to pay tax due to the estate one is in. These reasons were influenced by the Enlightenment because the people who were apart of the Enlightenment believed the same things.
Pursuing this further, the Enlightenment influenced the French because the French realized the rights they should have. For example, when Voltaire began to speak about the rights of liberty and property, the French felt they deserved the same rights, thus pushing them further into wanting to rebel. They also believed and yearned for the rights of freedom of religion. As Voltaire again stated, “the right of everyman…to what religion he choose.” The Enlightenment really showed the French that they deserved just as much freedoms and changes as Americans did.
