Accepting The Fringe Of Business Since the dawn of mankind, we have thrived on the idea of survival of the fittest. You did what you needed to stay alive and any edge to complete that task was necessary. Cohen argues that there is a good reason to gain this edge by hiring solely on looks rather than ability, and I couldn't agree more with Cohen's standpoint, because we are in a very competitive age, and methods such as using good looking people simply works. People shouldn't look at it as anymore that just a business gaining an edge. Keeping the very human tradition of surviving, we move into an age of technology where money is everything. If you lack money, you lack the necessities to survive. This makes for a very aggressive work place and any edge helps. An economics professor at University of Texas agrees, "attractive people are likely to earn 3% to 4% more than a person with below-average looks"(Shellenbarger). People claim it as discrimination, but it is just smart. Why reduce productivity because people feel hurt, it is a business and not an easy one to be in. They clearly want an image and if you cannot provide with the image it needs, then it is no different than being rejected by a job requires you to run when you can barely walk. According to a handbook that was given to a former employee, "Flip-Flops or slip-on sneakers are not only encouraged for Hollister employees, but required" (O'Brien). This ex-employee was Hani Khan, who claims she was let go because of her hijab. Khan was given a handbook and was well aware of the image she need to fulfill. This story was very personal as well as a negative reaction to an everyday life event people deal with. Khan, like many other ex-employees of companies, lashed out and claims that the hijab was the main reason for being let go, as we all know, it is easy to point fingers when you are the one in trouble.
