1.Based on the reading and discussion,as well as evidence from the film, explore the relationship between Norman Bates and his mother."From Pleasure Castle to Libido
Motel"ponders the idea of Normal Norman and Bad Mother and also Bad Norman and Normal mother, amongst other combinations of who is evil and who is not and when "evil"started.Offer your own analysis on this relationship and how the muderous Norman came to fruition. In the artical written by Raymond Durgnat(1958) "from Pleasure Castle to Libido Motel" one of the theories proposed that Norman was never a normal son,he was very jealouse of his mother and her promiscouis behaviors, then he imagined she was the jealous one,he then lived out two …show more content…
false charactors,Normal Norman and Nasty Mom. I agree with this theory because the only thing Normal about Norman was his appearence.the history of Norman and his mother explains how Norman developed such a psychotic mind. i believed it begain after his fathers dealth,Norman had to step up to the plate as the man of the house, his mother grew needy and Norman was there to cater to her every wish. Norman developed a close relationship with his mom, consistering that all they had left where each other. Norman probably never had a normal childhood,he probably never went to sleepovers, birthday parties,or did anything that normal children,or teenagers get to do. therefore Norman's mother became his everything.when Norman's mother got invold with a man,it mad Norman so mad he poisened the both of them.i would counsider normans actions competely unnormal.A crime created out of passion, "a passion crime".If Norman was a normal son, then why would his mother having a boyfriend upet him to the point of murder.most passion crimes are comitted by lovers.the murder of Normans beloved mother forever changed him sending him into craziness and insanity.the Norman Bates we meet at the begaining of the film, the sweet, son helping his mother and devoting on his time to the motel, was a cover up for Noman.he is really an insane man with an oedipus complex, that lead him to become a pshyco.
2.Explore the thesis by the article "women as possed monster:The Exorcist." Since a movie is never just a movie, the article argues that "The Exorcist" represents the rejection of symbolic order(often seen as masculine)and a return to semiotic chora(often viewed as feminine)as characterized by he abject(in this case, blood, bile, open sores,ect.).In laymen's terms, the filmis about the battle between man and woman for control and this battle is explored in the characteristics of regan's abject possession(including but not limited to hypersexuality;themes of incest;the appearence of blood, bile, open, sores;and profanity). on the other had ,others have argued that the film is an exploration of the modern world's Godlessness and the impact of this Godlessness on the modern world.based on the reading a film what is your conclusion. i think is film is an exploration of good vs evil,a battle between God and the Devil.the mother in the film appeared to be an sucessful single mom rasing her daughter, and enjoying life as an famous actress.the mother did not appear relgions.Regan is the representation of good, she is an loving daughter.the evil sprite that possess her is powerful, dark, and destructive. now the battle begins, first of all we need to take a closer look at why did the evil sprite chose Regan?.the mothers nonrelgious background play a big role in the sprite's decsion.the evil prite probabbly did'nt think that Regans mother would venture into relgion since she was not a relgious person, the sprite thought this would be an easy fight. after Regan's mother exshauled all other posibilites of what could be wrong with her child, she finally seeks the help of a preist inorder to save her daughter.the preist represents God,and the battle is ragging fullforce. after a very intense battle,Regan's life is spared, the selfless act of the preist saved her, allowing good over power evil.
3.Briefly summarize (around one sentence for each) the illusion theory, pretend theory, and thought theory (explored in Philosophy of Horror 59-88), and make an argument for which theory is the most applicable/useful toward answering the quetion of whyhow people enjoy horror films, using references to our past three films a evidence.
Or create your own theory( could be a hybrid of the three or something that goes in a complete differnt direction). If you create your own theory, youwill still need to reference scholary work( the textbook or outside research) to support your claim. in the book by Noel Carroll" the philosophy of Horror" Illusion theory states we are horrified by the manifestation of being in the presence of a monster. the pretend theory states that if we are aware that the monsters are not real then how can we form a genuine emotion of fear.the thought theory states that if thought the monster was real it could create a sense of fear, thought is used here as a term of art that is meant to contrast to belief.the theory i think best answer the question why people enjoy scary movies would be the thought theory.the thoght therory reflects the way i veiw scary movies,it the possiblity that the monster on the film could actually exist at the moment and time that i am actually watching the movie,it creates fear for the remaning of the movie.to be able to entertain scary thoughts brings the horror films to life.in the movie "The Exorcist" th possibilies that the devil can actually possess a child,is frieghting to watch on
film.
4.the gimmicks i would use to boost attendance at "The killer Pugrantula" .i would have a billion fake rubber pugrantula's created. i would send them to wide selections of thearters and ask the thearther to hang the fake creatures on the ceilings of the theather. at the end of the movie, right before the lights come on ,i want the pugrantula's to drop on the audience from the ceiling, causing the audeince to leave the movies's screaming!!!!!
