The dipterans order has an olfactory stimulus that helps it search for the food (Stocker et al. 2007). There are flies such as dragon, house flies and various other flies in diptera order. Flies are attracted to sugar and seem to have certain neurons that activate upon encountering the sugary content. The compounds contained sugars, salts, bitter food, and certain other Molecules are detected by gustatory neurons, which are widely distributed in the body of the fly (Stocker et al. 2007 ). Neurons that influence feeding behavior are present in the labellum as well as the tarsal segments of each of the legs. Activation of either labellar or tarsal gustatory neurons with a sugar solution results in proboscis extension, which is a component of feeding behavior Flies have neuron on their legs, wings and body that activate whenever sugar is near (Dye 2004). Flies such as fruit flies eat nectar because it is …show more content…
It was north of the campus on the hill nearby the Sarah Fleishman Agriculture building. The experiment was held from March 26 to April 16. The weather was not constant meaning it was warm in the first week than there was rain. In the last week of experiment there were snow showers as well. Four pitfalls (cups) were set up in ground under the sagebrush and the cups are above the ground about ¾ containing different substances to test the hypothesis. The cup 1 was filled with soapy water as a control group, cup 2 with orange dye mixed in water, cup 3 orange scent with water and the fourth one had orange juice , every cups had the same 50 ml of soapy water except the cup 4 only donating the orange juice. The tape was placed properly to create the trap for the Diptera and create a barrier for insects. The cups were replaced every week and the Diptera were collected .The collected Diptera was preserved in the ethanol solution. Chi Square was used to analyzed the
