Fruits And Vegetable Waste Case Study
There are different strategies followed by people to save food like limited cooking, limited purchase of food items etc. This study is concentrated on how people are using the fruits and vegetable waste like peel and skin which are usually thrown to thrash. The result was a surprise because even though some people are throwing the waste to trash, many are utilizing it in a different way, they are recycling it. In this study, few people about 6 out of 20 ( show percentage) are throwing away the waste directly to the thrash which is supported by the study conducted by Parizeau et al (2015) where about 39% of respondents told they are throwing the waste to garbage. Even though most of the people throw away the waste many are having good knowledge and awareness about how fruits and vegetables can be utilized in better ways. Most of them told decomposition is one of the best ways to utilize the waste because through this good fertilizer for the plant can be obtained and environmental pollution can be avoided. Others opinion includes feeding the animal and using the waste for production of biogas. One of the respondents told that fruits and vegetable which are having no good appearance but still healthy to eat is not preferred by many people, this should be shared with other people who cannot afford to buy fruits and vegetable so that nutritional need of those people will be fulfilled and food will be not …show more content…
There are many reasons for non-utilization of wastes which are stated by interviewees. Respondents told as they are having no place to do decomposition of wastes they are throwing it for thrash. Decomposition is not the cup of tea for the people who are living in apartments. Lack of time and patience is another reason, for example, to prepare snacks using pumpkin seed it is cumbersome to remove the upper layer of the seeds which requires a lot of effort and time. Instalment of biogas plant requires more money which is another barrier for not utilization of waste for biogas production. Even though most of the people are aware of utilizing the waste but there are people still who are not aware of many methods by which those wastes can be utilized.     For instance, many restaurants trash the excess food. Overproduction and incorrectly cooked meals get tossed away every day. Food that is thrown away in restaurants gets tossed in landfills where the food will rot and decompose in the soil causing problems in the environment.     The Community Food Assessment Project was designed by the Faculty of Land and Food System in the University of British Columbia. The general focus of this project series is to address food related issues in different communities within British Columbia; therefore, more research and actions can be taken to improve these concerns. For the Agriculture Sciences 350 course in UBC, students take part in the project to help investigate various areas and research on plausible actions to polish the communities. One of the current conditions in the focused community, the City of Vancouver, is the overwhelming amount of food waste being sent to landfill. If the food waste were composted instead, not only does it reduce the space quantity waste going to the landfill, the organic matters are also reused. This paper discusses food waste management in the City of Vancouver and determines the most feasible method to handle the food waste rather than contributing more to the landfills. By interviewing professionals in the industry that have an extensive knowledge in the field and obtaining information from internet sources and books, a few possible methods were found, such as: composting, animal feed, anaerobic digestion and Gore Cover. The advantages and disadvantages of each method were then compared, by using indicators such as cost, efficiency and end products. The comparison presented the most feasible method for the food waste management not only because of the relative lower cost, sufficient efficiency and harmless end products, but also due to the possible improvement of the sustainability component within the community. The final conclusion drawn from this project is to use the Gore Cover technology to manage food waste in the City of Vancouver.…
