The first long term effects of insufficient sleep can cause people to gain obesity. Insufficient sleep can cause hormonal changes and fluctuations in a person’s body. People who do not have the average of sleeping hours tend to eat more calories and carbohydrates foods which can lead to serious weight gain and obesity. In our body there are two hormones controlling us which is ghrelin when we are hungry and leptin when we are full. So when we do not have enough sleep the level of ghrelin will increase and thus we will eat more to crave our hunger which will cause fat level in our body to increase.
The second long term effects of insufficient sleep can cause us memory loss. When you have insufficient sleep your brain will not function well and you will forget things easily. This is because your brain does not have enough rest. In our everyday task we need to use our brain to think and act, thinking alone can cause the brain to be exhausted. By having sufficient sleeps can help our brain to take a break and recover so that our brain can be prepared and function well for the next task.
The third long term effects of insufficient sleep is people who sleep less than six hours per day is believed to have a higher chances of getting heart stroke. Studies from Sleep and Disease Risk in 2007, shows that insufficient sleep in people who have existing hypertension can cause elevated blood pressure throughout the day and thus cause the stroke to happen. The fourth long term effects of insufficient sleep is the risk of getting cancer. It is also believe that a person who sleeps less than six hours per day have a higher chances of getting cancer than a person who have enough sleep. According to some doctors, psychologists and researcher in our body we have melatonin and cortisol hormones which are produced during night when we are sleeping (Tala, 2011). Melatonin and cortisol is said to play an important role in preventing cancer.
The effect of insufficient sleep can cause serious harm to us so it is important for us to have sufficient sleep every day. Therefore, each and every one of us should sleep at least seven and a half to nine hours to prevent ourselves from being exposed from all this negative factors of insufficient sleep.
