Tshewang Dendup, Executive Director of Samdrup Jongkhar Initiative (SJI), provided a brief overview of the activities of SJI in his keynote address on the first day of the meet. With the vision to “raise living standards … of Samdrup Jongkhar and beyond by establishing food security and self-sufficiency, protecting and enhancing the natural environment, cooperative, productive, entrepreneurial and self-reliant spirit,” SJI focus areas on zero waste, organic farming, appropriate technology, and youth engagement. Stressing on the need for generation of reliable and relevant knowledge, he emphasized that research should be relevant to the grassroots in order to facilitate effective implementation of various initiatives and programmes. The Executive Director informed the gathering that “it was underlined from the beginning that SJI activities require a strong research and evidence base to ensure that development actions are based in local realities”. He highlighted the fruitful partnership with GPI Atlantic, a Canadian NGO under which SJI has been able to receive funding from the Canadian Partnership Program of the International Development
