Future Business Leaders of America promotes several goals to its members, but one stands out to me as its main purpose: Strengthen the confidence of students in themselves and their work. As a society, we should figure out where individuals lose confidence. We should then …show more content…
discover how individuals are negatively impacted and finally prevent them from losing confidence. Hopefully we can realize something significant and inspire the youth of tomorrow.
You and I, we're at a point in life where a combination of school, work, and our private lives all come together to provide a handful of stress.
In those moments, we begin to lose hope in ourselves. From failing on a Pre-Cal test, to not having a prom date. From not having enough time to spend with your friends to not placing in a competition you worked so hard on. All, in the bigger picture, petty things, but in that moment, they carry enough leverage to pull us down.
Those experiences make us reevaluate our potential. What we can do... And what we can't. They make us weak. We automatically deem ourselves to not be smart, attractive, and rich enough. Not enough for the world. Edmund Burke once said, "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing,” and that's exactly what we're letting happen.
We decide to leave crucial change up to others, which is detrimental to our society and its progression. We let the world plunder when it needs us the most.
So what can we do? I believe that today we're infatuated by the luxury of life, but the unexpected little things can move us. Teachers, parents and leaders must see the hard work of students and point it out. Make them feel that they really and truly are exceptional. Future Business Leaders of America does this by providing contestants who qualify for state with a medal for putting effort into an event, which ultimately makes students feel better about themselves. I myself am an
example.
I competed my freshman and sophomore year in an event which resulted in an embarrassing loss. Rather than lose hope, I received a shiny medal to take pride in the effort I had put in. It’s another story that my mother not knowing everyone received a medal bought me an X-box for my accomplishment. But, the important thing is the medal did bring a smile to both our faces for different reasons.
Coming back to my story, I was visiting Philadelphia to tour the University of Pennsylvania. It's been my dream school as long as I can remember. My ambitions and goals in life, I believed, could only be possible from an education like the one I would receive at UPenn. I recently found out that I was rejected to Penn. As passionate as I was about Penn, I cried. I was hurt. All the hard work that I had put in for years had all gone to waste, and I started lost hope...
But I remembered something, the 20x10 chalkboard that had the words "I can change the world by.." happen to lay outside the gates of UPenn not inside. The college and the people behind the board wanted each of us to know that you didn't need an Ivy League education to change the world.
Anyone of us has the potential to. And you can do that from anywhere you come from: whether that's from a low income neighbored or a college that supposedly can’t provide the opportunities as an Ivy League can. All you need is the conviction and the confidence in your ambitions.
I take pride in the fact that I am part of FBLA whose goal is to make its group members feel better, stronger and more confident about themselves. And if you happen to be on the verge of losing hope, there’s an old inspirational proverb that says, “An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward. When life is dragging you back with difficulties, it means it’s going to launch you into something so great. So focus and keep aiming.”
Thank you.
