Wardens are typically equipped with comfortable sport utility patrol vehicles or all-terrain vehicles to carry out their duties, but the vehicles are mandatory for the wardens to use to conduct stakeouts and search and rescue operations during the constant exposure to the bitter cold, extreme heat, and heavy rain, sleet, and snow. As the seasons start to change from fall to winter not only does the temperature start to drop but bullets start to fly as rifle hunting season opens for the residents of different states. With the bullets flying during December and into the beginning of January the risk of a game warden getting injured on the job by stray hunter's bullets is increased. In Sacramento, California there was a case involving a veteran game warden hospitalized with severe injuries after the warden was struck in the hand by a stray projectile coming from a hunter's gun. Being alone at the time the warden was forced to radio for help and wait until assistance arrived while he waited with bullet fragments lodged in his neck. Occasionally, when a game warden faces gunfire it is by accident but at times he or she will be forced to confront a potentially dangerous suspect of hunting or fishing laws.
