Within communities there are various principles and responsibilities that each member holds: many are specific to the individual but, many are shared. In this, organizations are formed to carry out these various principles and responsibilities on a large scale to have a more prevalent impact upon their communities. In the process of advancing the black community in the United States of America, the nation that has oppressed them for generations, to one of relevance, black fraternities and sororities dedicated to service were formed on college campuses during the turn of the 20th century. Each of these organizations has a set of cardinal principles or pillars from which they are guided in operation. On November 17, 1911 on the campus of Howard…
I have decided to apply to the UNCW Honors College because I strive to excel in everything I do while setting an example for my peers. I am a natural leader and feel that being a member of the honors college would propel me into the leadership role that I thrive in. I am strong in my beliefs and morals and will positively impact my peers as well as my community. I also would like to be surrounded by strong, like-minded individuals that take pride in their school and community. While being a member of the UNCW Honors College, I hope to positively impact my school as well as my community. I have lived in Wilmington all my life and have grown up around UNCW. Since this is my hometown I have a great deal of pride for this area and look to enrich…
Step is common in today’s society. It was dance that originated in Africa by gold miners who were not allowed to speak to one another and had to use their hands and feet as means of communication. Africans came to America and formed the first African American fraternity. These fraternities are the ones that created todays’ “stepping” and based it on the traditional gumboot dances. The dancers endured a lot of suffering through their journey and brought something great to America that is now a crazed sensation.…
I would love to join the Mu Alpha Theta/Math Society because I am passionate about numbers, equations, formulas & anything that has to do with math, I just love it. Since I enjoy math I know that I will succeed in the Math Society. I will see it as something I enjoy & look forward to. I am a very dedicated person, especially if it comes to something that I like, like math. I’m good with math, once I’ve learned and master the objective I’ll be able to solve it and maybe even find a short cut for the problem that I’m solving. I’m responsible with what I do and what I have to get done. I am not a procrastinator; I tend to try to get my work done as soon as possible to get it out of the way. I feel as if I would be accepted to the math society I could bring some creativity to the table. As well I am willing to take part of my time to put into this organization by helping out in anything that is need. For example, maybe fundraisers, community service or any other things where my assistance maybe be need.…
As a young teenager graduating from high school over 17 years ago, I had always vision myself attending a university and pledging in a sorority. However, things didn’t go according as plan. I got caught up in this world called life and became very content not noticing that the life I had always dreamt of for myself was passing me by. Although, I received my Certified Nursing Assistant licensed back in 2001, I knew this wasn’t the career path that I wanted to stay in. I attended Chattanooga State twice before, yet I never finished. I’m an individual that always procrastinate and seems to start things but never finished. As a result of this, I feel that now is the right time for me to attend Chattanooga State. Attending Chattanooga State now will help me improve my career, lead by example and most of all prove to myself that I for once I can accomplish and finish something.…

Since my freshman year, I have been in the Lady Mountie Soccer team and since my sophomore year I have been in the Shades Valley Color Guard. While still being in those sports activities, I also take part in other organizations like the National Honor Society and Science National Honor Society, and at same time taking AP classes. From being in all of these activities and classes, I have learned to be excellent at time scheduling with homework, soccer and color guard practices, and meetings. Although it may be challenging to keep track of time while taking more classes with UA Early College, I am still willing to proceed with the program because I know that there will be help from UA Early College peer coaches, and learning communities coordinator. Also I regularly finish all of my work that my AP classes gives me, and I dedicate myself to my other extracurricular activities. Therefore, I have no doubt that I would be successful as a UA Early College student because I know how to leave space for my studies, I am an eligible student, and I can commit to learning at a UA Early…
Toast for a change has to do with this young girl who joins a sorority and soon finds out it isn’t what she imagined. Getting into a sorority doesn’t seem worth the degrading process, but once it’s all over popularity takes its course. At first hearing it was all totally worth it if she had friends and got into parties for free, but as time goes on she continues to ask herself, is it really worth it? There comes a time when things either need to change or simply be removed. Whether or not she is brave enough to make the decision depends on her. Several individuals don’t have what it takes to shape for something that's right, when facing the so-called “popular people. She will have to do this on her own, like I did.…
