Gauss Markov Theorem
Gauss Markov Theorem

In the mode [pic]is such that the following two conditions on the random vector [pic]are met:
1. [pic]
2. [pic] the best (minimum variance) linear (linear functions of the [pic]) unbiased estimator of [pic]is given by least squares estimator; that is, [pic]is the best linear unbiased estimator (BLUE) of [pic].
Proof:
Let [pic]be any [pic]constant matrix and let [pic]; [pic] is a general linear function of [pic], which we shall take as an estimator of [pic]. We must specify the elements of [pic]so that [pic]will be the best unbiased estimator of [pic]. Let [pic] Since [pic] is known, we must find [pic]in order to be able to specify [pic]. For unbiasedness, we have

[pic]

But, to be unbiased, [pic] must equal [pic], and this implies that [pic]for all [pic]. Thus, unbiasedness specifies that [pic].
For property of “best” we must find the matrix [pic]that minimized [pic], where [pic], subject to the restriction [pic]. To examine this, consider the covariance

[pic]

Let [pic]Then [pic]. The diagonal elements of [pic] are respective variances of the [pic]. To minimize each [pic], we must, therefore, minimize each diagonal elements of [pic]. Since [pic]and [pic]are constants, we must find a matrix [pic]such that each diagonal element of [pic]is a minimum. But [pic] is positive semidefinite; hence [pic] Thus the diagonal elements of [pic] will attain their minimum when [pic] for [pic]. But, if [pic]then [pic] Therefore, if [pic]is to equal 0 for all [pic], it must be true that [pic]for all [pic]and [pic]. This implies that [pic]. The condition[pic]is compatible with the condition of unbiasedness, [pic]. Therefore, [pic]and [pic]. This completes the

RIVER ISLAND CLOTHING CO. LTD.: INITIAL SUBMISSION Full Version The history of River Island spans 55 years. The business started in 1948 as a small lock-up shop in East London selling wool and ladies clothing. As the business increased shops were added under the name of “Lewis Separates” and the focus became ladies clothing. By 1968 there were some 70 stores in the UK and “Lewis Separates” introduced into a few of its stores a brand new concept and name. Innovative in design and format these stores used strong colours, bold fashion imagery and pop music to create “Chelsea Girl,” the first UK chain of fashion boutiques. With continuing expansion, menswear was introduced in 1983 under the “Concept Man” brand and from 1988 further evolution took the form of the development ofa new brand concept of a themed store offering fashion for men and women. The new brand was called “River Island” and today the product range includes men’s and women’s clothing and footwear, accessories and cosmetics. A dedicated in-house design and sourcing team creates fashionable, stylish and quality clothing representing value for money, targeted at the fashion conscious 18-35 year old market. As at 28 December 2002 River Island had net capital resources of £85.5 million and achieved sales of £377.6 million for the 52 weeks. River Island is a wholly owned subsidiary of Lewis Trust Group Ltd, which is the parent of a diversified group engaged in the retailing, property, leisure and financial services sectors. As at 31 December 2002 Group consolidated net capital resources amounted to £408 million. Relevant Markets River Island designs and retails men’s and women’s clothing, footwear, accessories and cosmetics. The majority of products are designed in-house and sold principally under the River Island brand, although other River Island owned brands are used. A small proportion of sales are attributable to thirdparty brands. River Island has shops in over 180 locations Great Britain and Northern…

Other names for SVD are “Eckart-Young decomposition” after Eckart and Young (1936), who introduced the technique in psychometrics, and “basic structure” (Horst, 1963). The rescalings and centering, including their rationale, are well explained in Benzécri (1969), Nishisato (1980), Gifi (1981), and Greenacre (1984). Those who are interested in the general framework of matrix approximation and reduction of dimensionality with positive definite row and column metrics are referred to Rao (1980). The delta method is a method that can be used for the derivation of asymptotic distributions and is particularly useful for the approximation of the variance of complex statistics. There are many versions of the delta method, differing in the assumptions made and in the strength of the approximation (Rao, 1973, ch. 6; Bishop et al., 1975, ch. 14; Wolter, 1985, ch. 6).…
