of a traditional marriage or definition of a union of marriage. The difference between traditional marriage and gay marriage is the sexual preference by the partners. Both marriages involve a relation with another person. Also those against same sex marriages find it inappropriate because it is against religious beliefs. But why should those that prefer a same sex marriage be judged and told that it is not right? It is like saying how one should dress, how they should wear their hair, and how they should act. They have a constitutional right as those in a traditional marriage. Society should not be able to change ones constitutional right because of his/hers sexuality. Although people believe that it is against religious beliefs, it should not have an effect on making gay marriage legal because, the legislation between the state and religion are two different matters. If religion has a part in legalizing gay marriage, it should be allowed to be involved in schools and other places that disallow religion.
Another reason why gay marriage should be legalized is because; it represents equality for those that are involved in a same sex marriage. Of those six states that allow gay marriage, those couples are more accepted and the issue of gay marriage decreases. But allowing gay marriage has also represented the constitutional right that they have just like those in a traditional marriage. 7 out of 10 people report that they know or are related to someone that is gay. ("Aldrige.Donesha"). The main controversy over whether gay marriage should be legalized is 46% of the adult population. That 46% that oppose the legislation most likely explain their position on the basics of religious beliefs or interpretations of biblical passages dealing with the same sex relation ("Religion Big Factor"). When asked why people are against same sex marriage 46% say it’s wrong for biblical and religious beliefs(“Religion Big Factor”). Sixteen percent believe it is morally wrong and ruins the meaning of a untraditional marriage ("Religion Big Factor"). Lastly, gay marriage should be legalized because statistics have shown that states that allow gay marriage have a lower divorce rate and a higher adoption rate than states that are against gay marriage.
On the 17th of May 2004, Massachusetts was the first state to allow gay marriage ("Aldrige.Donesha").In 2010, Massachusetts 's divorce rate was 2.5 per 1000 couples(“Divorce Rate”). This average fell second to Iowa when they legalized gay marriage, which showed the lowest divorce rate of 2.4 per 1000 couples ("Religion Big Factor"). 'In 2010, the United States ranked as the 5th country to have the highest divorce rate (3.4)(“Divorce Rate”). With statistics showing that divorce rates of 2010 were lower in 2004, many more families of the same sex are evolving. ("Divorce Rate"). With a decreasing divorce rate, according to the United States Census Bureau data, the numbers of children living with same sex couples have doubled since 2000, but how much is from adoption is not certainly clear ("GayAdoptionLoveandPride"). In the past three years states allowing gay couples to adopt has nearly tripled (“Gay Adoption.LoveandPride"). Forty Eight states allow single gays and lesbians to adopt children except Mississippi and Utah . With less divorces and more marriages, more children are being adopted and show better social interactions which can improve other problems that children face as they grow up ("Gay Adoption.LoveandPride"). The main controversy is that many people fear that a
child that grows up in a same sex relationship is more likely to miss out on a motherly or fatherly figure to look up to. Also that the child will grow up thinking that it is the right to be involved in a same sex relationship when they get older. With only six states allowing gay marriage, it can bring equality to those who are in same sex marriage, also a lower divorce rate, and a higher adoption rate. With this issues of religion, legislative, culture, and family issues, it does make it hard to legalize gay marriage while others say that those couples should have the same constitutional rights as those in a traditional marriage.
