for students. Goal planning will play an important role in determining the best strategy for my career. I am accountable for the choices I make and the route I take from this day forward. I must not blame others or outside circumstances for any failure. It would behoove me to make the right choices in college and in life because that is how I plan on leaving my legacy. Personal responsibility to me is defined as taking control of my life choices while considering the impact it would have on those people around me and the consequences it would have on everyone in my life. For example, in deciding to go back to school, I would need to take into consideration all of the factors and time constraints that would result from this decision. I would still need to be responsible for my other obligations and would not want to neglect them. Incorporating my academic life into my personal life would be a requirement to achieve balance in both. Consulting others who are affected by this decision is critical. Accepting responsibility in all areas of my life is necessary to achieving my goals while still allowing others in my life to achieve theirs. While personal responsibility is essential for success in all aspects of life, it is especially critical in the life of a student for academic success. A student must take responsibility for organizing his schoolwork along with all areas of his outside life. An example of this is to know exactly how to set up an essay in a particular format required in accomplishing the essay. Therefore, being organized is the key to preventing outside activities from interfering with schoolwork. The responsibility also extends to being disciplined with time and knowing how to manage wisely. A student would need to assess his current use of time and be willing to adapt and change to conform to school activities. Students would also have to learn how to manage their time accordingly, to ensure that the work is done accurately and turned in on time. Instructors and school administrators can provide advice and assistance as necessary, but it will be up to the student to utilize them. If a pupil is not familiar with the tools available in the school website such as E-books and the library, the individual will have to set aside the time to learn how to use these valuable resources. A couple of the tools I found and took advantage of on the school website are the “writing and grammar guide” and the “thesis generator.” One may also need to become more familiar with doing research on the Internet. Jones (2002) wrote in his article that college students use the Internet as a tool for communicating and conducting research. He also shows how students interact with the changing climate of their studies. Students should become more familiar with Internet searches and learn how to narrow them down to the specific item they need. Students also need to stay focused on the subject matter and be aware of what tends to lead them off track. Some students may do better with some background noise while others prefer peace and quiet. In this case, some students would have to find a place to study where distractions are limited. There will be times when students must encourage and motivate themselves and also be able to recognize when they are getting discouraged and be willing to ask for assistance when necessary. When finding difficulty in understanding assignments, they should reach out to team members or ask the instructor for assistance. Another important factor is to learn how to find the right balance of school and other areas of one’s personal life. Difficult choices will sometimes have to be made to balance commitments to succeed in academic life. Personal planning and goal setting is imperative to the success of a student.
One of the most important first steps is to learn about time management. Learning the strategies of a good time management system and applying them ultimately will benefit the student tremendously. Stanford (n.d.) states that time management skills will help students manage their goals effectively which will assist them in completing homework assignments on schedule and prepare for examinations. Students will have to monitor their time and adjust it accordingly for studies and assignments. While monitoring my time, I found it helpful in selecting the best times to study and complete my homework assignments. It is suggested that students spend at least two hours studying for every hour of class time. I personally plan on following this rule to give me adequate time to complete my assignments. Every student is different, but he can find a time management system that works best to balance school, work, and family. The planning system utilizing a list with prioritizing tasks as “A”, “B”, or “C” along with an “Outlook” calendar seems to work best. Students also need to learn how to set goals and to incorporate their short- term, mid-term and long-term goals into their academic lives. This will allow them to recognize how necessary their short-term goals are and how they affect their long-term goals. One cannot achieve long-term goals without first succeeding in their short-term goals. They go hand in hand. For example, a long-term goal is to get a BA degree, but I cannot accomplish this without first having success in my short-term goal of attending all classes and completing all work assignments on time. For success in another long-term goal of good health, I would need to be committed to eating healthy foods and not over eat because of stress. Exercising regularly and getting enough sleep regardless of other commitments will ensure students a refreshed and
alert mindset for class. I believe these goals will improve my academic life by assisting me in completing assignments on time and ensuring regular attendance. Students should not blame anyone else or use outside interferences as an excuse for not meeting goals. According to Haskins (2009), “The demise of personal responsibility occurs when individuals blame their family, their peers, their economic circumstances, or their society for their own failure to meet standards” (para 1). I plan on taking full responsibility for all of my actions. Regardless of the outside influences that can affect what happens in my life, I believe I can be responsible enough to take the necessary actions to complete the scholastic goals I have set. I can find the best time management system that works for my lifestyle and choose to follow it so that I can make the best and most efficient use of my time. By investing time in learning how to use all of the tools and resources available to me, I will be adequately prepared to complete my schoolwork. The short-term goals that I set will be steps to achieving my long-term goals. By being accountable for my own actions, I can make a difference in my success.
