Female Neutralization Is More Accepted By The Public Than Male Neutralization
Abstract
Li Yuchun is popular for her neutralized coolness and handsomeness while Xiang Ding for his mextrasexual charm. Show programs like “Super Girls” and “Come on! Good Boy” have produced many neutralized stars who are leading neutralization especially in fashion. Though holding an increasingly positive attitude towards gender neutralization, the public actually have different opinions.
Key Words: neutralization female male acceptance
Introduction
On the stage, there are handsome Li Yuchun and elegant Xiang Ding. As a matter of fact, there are huge numbers of young people especially among post 80s and 90s imitating this way of dressing. Another fact is that manly dressed girls become eye-catching and popular. Boys wearing earrings are no longer regarded as negatively effeminate. Instead, they are accepted as popular metro sexual.
This study has three main aims: a. to explore the public attitudes towards gender neutralization; b. to examine whether the female neutralization is much more accepted than the male neutralization; c. to analyze the reasons for the different degrees of acceptance.
Definitions
For the purposes of this study, it is important to define “gender-neutralization”. Neutralization is actually a representation of a third temperament of both masculinity and femininity. (Pan Yunjun in China Acdemic Journal Electronic Publishing House). To be more specific, if one dresses himself without noticeable gender characteristics, wearing adornments and hairstyles which can also be worn by the opposite gender, he is then a neutralized one.
Methodology and Data Collection
Based on previous researches conducted by some professionals, it can be supposed that female neutralization is much higher accepted by the public than the male neutralization mainly concerning dressing on account of three factors: the change of social status, the influence of media, and the personal reluctance to change.
Firstly, female neutralized styling suggests that women’s social status is rising, while male neutralized styling suggests that men’s social status is descending.
Secondly, the media exposure rate of female neutralized images is higher than that of male neutralized images; in the media, images of neutralized female are more positive.
Thirdly, the traditional male image barely changes in people’s inherent conception, making people hard to accept male neutralized styling.
Based on these assumptions, the questionnaire was carefully designed. All together there were 24 questions, dealing with public attitudes towards gender-neutralized dressing of others and their better half, public images of neutralized female and neutralized male, and the images produced by the media. Some question samples are as follows:
Q4: Choose your response to men’s dressing in undershirt, multicolor, or tights etc?
A. like (喜欢) B. admire (欣赏) C .accept (接受) D. revoltive (反感) E. irksome (厌恶)
Q24: Choose your answer to the question: will you choose a neutralized one to be your spouse?
A. absolutely yes (一定会) B. maybe yes (可能会) C .no (不会) D. impossible(绝不可能)
Q15:Compare the following two men, which do you think is more powerful and efficient-working?
A. one dressing in suit.(西装打扮的男人) B. one dressing neutrualizedly(中性打扮的男人)
The questionnaires were conducted over a period of 2 weeks and they were conducted in Chinese. The participants were 325 young people, mainly university students in China, 162 male and 163 female. The extra interviewees were chosen from our friends. All agreed to participate in the research voluntarily.
Findings and Discussion
The data from the questionnaires generally shows that gender neutralization is more and more accepted by the public. However, compared with female neutralization, male neutralization is less accepted. That is, the general assumption has been proven right.
|Figure 1 |Female Neutralization |Male Neutralization |

|Male | | |
|Participants | | |
When asked about their attitudes towards gender neutralization, most of the participants chose “accept” though, Figure 1 above shows that, female neutralization is accepted by nearly 90 percent of male participants and circa 85 percent of female participants. That’s nearly nine-tenths participants accept female neutralization.
However, male neutralization is accepted by a relatively low 67.8 percent of male participants and a lower 55.2 percent of female participants. More obviously, 32.1 percent of male participants feel revoltive even irksome. So do a half of the female participants. That’s, male neutralization is less accepted.
Why male neutralization is not as widely accepted as female neutralization? One suggestion goes like this: female neutralization is a demonstration of an increase in social status while male neutralization is a sign of decrease in social status.
|Figure 2 |Which is more efficient-working and powerful? |

|Female |[pic] |[pic] |

Figure 2 above indicates that people tend to trust neutralized female in work efficiency while losing confidence in neutralized male. When asked to choose a better worker from following options, all together, 211 participants chose neutralized female compared with female in skirt. But only 27 participants chose neutralized male compared with male in suits.
According to previous research of Guo Xuan (2007) in Social Scientist, female dressing neutralizedly enjoy an advantage comparing with female dressing ladily in job market. They’re considered more powerful and strong minded than the so called ladies. But, on the contrary, male dressing neutralizedly are regarded as effeminate as lady alike, lacking ambitiousness and reliableness. Since the influence of feminism, women have been always struggling to seek a higher social status. And their right of equality in society has also been conceded and bolstered by men. Therefore, their demonstration of increase in social status can be widely accepted. However, the fact is that, it’s still a patriarchal society, in which the sign of decline of men is, therefore, against the public stereotype, at least, against the men’s sense of superiority. As a result, people especially men, cannot accept male neutralization.
Another reason for the reluctance to accept male neutralization is supposed to be the different exposure by media. Neutralized female mostly turn up as a positive role on TV show, TV series and novels etc, which may lead to the wiper acceptance of female neutralization.
However, the data collected proved not. Public think neutralized male also appear as positive as fashion icons on TV, magazines, and TV series etc. There’s no noticeable difference in the influence of media. Yet, whether the public were choosing exactly according to the question or to their own opinions remains further research. Anyway, this assumption is not that convincing.
Conclusion
When gender neutralization is not directly related to oneself, most people show a high degree of acceptance. And as it’s supposed before, female neutralization enjoys a higher degree of acceptance. Compared with a man in suit, the man dressing neutrally is considered far less powerful and efficient at work. While neutralized female are considered as more reliable than ladies. The exposure by media is minor influence leading to the acceptance of female neutralization. In sum, though agreeing the images of men and women are changing, people tend to bear their reluctance to accept the change, especially change of men.

In the article "Sweeping Away Gender-Specific Toys and Labels" writer Hiroko Tabuchi explains how many companies and manufacturers are now changing their products for all genders. This is a big step in our society because normally some toys and costumes can be seen as targeted towards one gender. For example, the Barbie dolls are a children's toy that could be seen as a toy only for girls and if our society can change on how it sees these types of toys, then in the future it will be more common for boys to be playing with these toys. Companies like Target and Toys R Us have taken some initiatives in removing gender labels for toys intended for children. Even though they removed the gender labels, toys that could be seen intended…

In the article “The Gender Blur: Where Does Biology End and Society Take Over?”, Deborah Blum starts off sharing a personal story. She describes her own childhood, where she had two individual presents that are thought, in society, to be for a girl or a girl. She receives things that clash such as a Barbie doll and a softball glove. Barbie dolls are meant to be delicate and more girlish, where as a softball glove is more rugged or active and more boyish. This gave her both different opportunities to be more girly or boyish. On the other hand, when she had two boys, the older one had become quite fond of dinosaurs. Not the herbivores, but the blood thirsty carnivores. She soon found her son to be gnawing on her leg, and realized the aggressive boy like characteristics.…

Yuping Zhang and Emily Hannum and Meiyan Wang. "Gender-Based Employment and Income Differences in Urban China: Considering the Contributions of Marriage and Parenthood." Social Forces 86.4 (2008): 156-159. Web. 2 April 2010. This article is based on the income differences and job opportunities of workers in urban China between men and women and why these differences exist. These authors argue that married women and parents receive the biggest disadvantage amongst female workers in China due to their lack of capital regarding education, energy and financially. These particular women are not able to make as many social connections as men do due to their role in the household and so they are at a great disadvantage. In China’s market it is essential to have these kinds of social connections. It is a capitalistic society where everyone is out for his or herself and so people must use other people to get what they want. If these connections are not present then these urban female workers will not be able to make nearly as much progress and therefore will be much less successful. It is these expectations that cheapen the women and set them at a great disadvantage if they ever plan on having a family and household to upkeep. This lack of opportunity in the article is summarized as a disadvantage of ‘time use’ due to being a wife and having children in comparison to those who do not. However, if a woman were to decide that she didn’t want a family and wanted to primarily focus on her work this would be frowned upon in society, due to how valued the dynamic of family is in China.…

Gender identity is the belief that one is male or female. There are many different factors that come into play with gender identity. It is not a simple process of what one looks like, but more complex. There are people born with male parts, some with female parts and even some born with both parts. For example, a hermaphrodite is a person born with ovarian and testicular tissue and an intersexual is born with either testes or ovaries but prenatal hormones produce their external genitals to be more like the opposite sex. This is very confusing to those experiencing it and we must gain more knowledge in order to correctly…

By evaluating the various structures and its functionality it provides, the function of gender contributes to the stability of our society. Specifically gender roles assign the responsibilities of women and men. In social role theory the gender stereotypes arise from historical occupations such as men being the breadwinner and women being the homemaker. In order to be in harmony with this perspective it is that women and men become active participants of these gender stereotypes in the workforce (Rudman & Phelan, 2010, p. 192). Stereotypes are learnt through the socialization process and influence stereotypical characteristics and roles. Interestingly enough Rudman & Phelan (2010) suggest that women exposed to non-traditional gender occupations,…

Approximately 70% of employer’s expenses consist of labor costs. An employer that hires only females can save 20 cent per dollar compared to one that only hires men. Since a female worker saves the company 20 cents per dollar, she is performing equally to a man – to a lower cost. Since marginal benefit versus marginal cost for women is 20 cents higher than the ratio of men, there should be a clear incentive for hiring women. There has been a major discussion over the passed years about the questions around whether women and minorities are being wage-discriminated on the basis of their sex/ethnicity. This paper will elaborate on the part of women. In the 1950’s one third of the US workforce was made out of women compared to today where two thirds are females. Apparently, this can be seen as a result of more women entering the labor market, whether they are proactively or reactively introduced to the market. According to McDowell & Thom in Principles of Economics (2006), some call this effective competitiveness while others reject it and call it discrimination, so the question arises – are women despite their market representation earning less than males?…

I just believe that management has to needs to take a hard and honest look at how the evaluation process is performed. It has to be more professional and honest and feelings and emotions need to be taken out of the process and complete work performance needs to be reviewed and assessed. This is the only way that true morale culture will be better when it comes around review time. During one on one meeting managers also need to be more honest about the process so that the employee has an opportunity to at least attempt to make a change. There should not only be group goals in regards to the 3P there need to be individual goals created so that individuals have an opportunity have an opportunity to shine instead of feeling like they are a part of one big…

When it comes to the work environment, a wage gap between men and women is one of the clear aspects to show gender discrimination. If we sum up the amount of time each person works during a day, including inside and outside the home, women tend to work more hours than men. Even so, the wages women receive are much less than men. Women scholars have made extensive studies about the role of women in society and what affects them in participation into the labor force. In term of work competency, there are barriers that restrict women from competing with men for high wages.…
