Essentially, the research conducted from this study concluded that advertisements both Vogue UK and Vogue US are using advertising to sublimely convey information about gender stereotypes, especially the role women play in society. Due to the high masculinity culture of the United States, which places heavy emphasis on achievements, gender roles are clearly defined in the advertising. However, considering that fashion is its own culture, Vogue US and Vogue UK both utilize imagery in enforcing gender roles. The two Vogue issues clearly defined the portrayal of gender roles, and how it has been translated into society. Advertisements showcased power in terms of a male model taller than the female model, women in submissive and sexually suggestive poses, in addition to images of women submissive toward products or other models. Also, both the European and American Vogue editions depicted female models as passive and relying on her beauty. Also the advertisements in both magazines Additionally, European designers like Balmain and Dolce & Gabbana showcased more sexualized and stereotypical advertising, compared to American designers. This is due to the fact that fashion magazines and the industry itself, are synchronized with the corresponding seasons. Also, collectively, the fashion industry tends to have the same opinion on aesthetics regardless of cultural differences. When analyzing fashion advertising, the effects of its impact can go beyond that of body image and eating disorders. This study helped to discover a connection between eating disorders and gender stereotypes. When women are portrayed in advertising, they are depicted as the ideal; slim and embodying the ultimate achievements of a woman. This can create a complex for some female viewers to essentially strive to achieve this look, therefore leading to body image

    With the advents of technology, advertisements depict women as desirable commodities this has poisoned the minds of many young women ultimately morphing values and beliefs. Women are shown in subordinate, submissive, and male pleasing roles. Media and advertisement representation reflects and reinforces sexism in society today.     An advertiser’s main goal is to make money by any means necessary. Therefore, it is no surprise that advertisements in the media today are preying upon young women’s insecurities and producing more and more advertisements that show how sex sells in the media. Throughout virtually any magazine or image in the media, a reader will find more women than men shown in the advertisements. Some of these advertisements include women interacting with men in a sexual manner, women wearing the slightest bit of clothing, if any, and women posing in provocative ways to sell a certain product. Virtually all of these advertisements and media images portray women who are extremely thin, sexy, and seductive in order to sell the products to either male or female consumers. Interestingly, the male consumer products that are advertised include women either being promiscuous with other women, or with men, while female consumer products only sometimes include men, yet nevertheless portray women seductively, beautifully, and in a way that appeals to men.     Susan Bordo describes the ways men can alter an advertisement, and how the way they dress and behave in the advertisement can change the perception of them. Some advertisements that centers around men are used for the sole purpose of exuding sex appeal. Campaigns advertising products such as cologne and fashion use this approach abundantly, mainly to get people’s attention. When men are illustrated this way, it is much more controversial because men are perceived more in a feminine way. As Susan Bordo states, “It is feminine to be on display” (Bordo, 135). Males exuding femininity is not completely accepted in today’s culture because of the stereotype that men should be authoritative and burly men. This approach was used in the Gucci Underwear advertisement that Bordo described in her first chapter. Other ways that an advertisement can showcase a man is by perceiving them as “heterosexual” (Bordo, 145) and a stereotypical burly man.     How does the media influence our body image? In what forms, does the media influence our perceptions about our body? These were the two questions that I asked myself in order to do the research paper and the panel discussion. In my opinion, I would agree that the media does influence and promote women and men to believe that the culture's standards for body image are ideal. Hence, the phrases, "thin is in" and "the perfect body" are two examples of "eye-catching" headlines that I observed in many women magazines.
