Gender-specific Schools Although the majority of high schools are mixed gender, there needs to be a change. Separation of gender in school systems would provide a better learning environment for students, because students generally feel more comfortable around members of the same sex; students would not be distracted by the opposite sex; and the level of student violence would decrease tremendously. When around members of the same gender, students often feel more comfortable with themselves. In general most students’ friends are of the same sex. This is when they feel most like themselves; they don’t have to worry about what they look like at all times, or what they say— because the people around them are the same gender and likely share the same feelings. Secondly, students would be less likely to get distracted. In mixed gender schools, students are constantly trying to keep up with who is dating whom, and who is single. Students are often worried about impressing the opposite sex; which takes their attention away from their class work. Gender-specific high schools would help to alleviate this problem. If students were around the same gender, a huge portion of distraction would be removed, and students could better focus on their education. Lastly, the level of violence would drastically decrease. The majority of fights that take place at mixed gender schools are over who looked at who’s girlfriend/boyfriend the wrong way. If we switched to same gender schools, there would no longer be meaningless violence. Violence would still occur, however a large portion would be removed. Students could be more relaxed, and be able to pay more attention to their class work than worry about what their girlfriend/boyfriend is doing. Gender-specific schools would be a good change to our current school systems. Students would be less distracted and would feel more self-confident. Same gender schools would be helpful to not only students, but teachers as well. The benefits to gender- specific schools are innumerable.
