Women who play sports are no exception to that problem as well. Last year the US Women’s National Soccer team made a “quarter less pay than the men’s team” (Santhanam). The women make much less pay, even though they are just as good, if not better than the men’s team. For instance, the women’s team won the women’s World Cup, while the men’s team barely finished in the top 16 in the men’s World Cup. This shows how women are discriminated against just because they are not in the men’s league, because bad men’s teams make more money than good women’s teams. The U.S. isn’t the only country with a gender wage gap though, for example, in England, “Steph Houghton, the best-paid female English player, earns around £65,000 a year, while Wayne Rooney receives £300,000 a week” (Wigmore). Wayne Rooney may be the best player for England, but that does not make up for the lesser pay the best England female player gets. This shows how the talent of the player doesn’t matter much in sports wages, it is the gender that decides it. If the best women joined the men’s league, they would receive nearly five times higher wages. Receiving higher wages would also encourage young girls to want to play sports, and not worry about making enough money. Women deserve equal pay for equal pay. While one reason why women should be able to join men’s sports leagues is because of their pay, another one is because of their media
