The game of basketball has been around for over century and in that time it has evolved immensely. From the creation of the ABA (American Basketball Association), and NBA (National Basketball Association), to their merger in 1976. Since then, the association has broken off even more from the men’s and women’s collegiate league to separation of the men’s and women’s professional league. The popularity around all of this has skyrocketed and the payouts are enormous. However, there is only a small portion of those who really see the benefits of being on national television, and that would be the men’s professional league. Don’t get me wrong the women do receive a paycheck too, but my cousin makes more than them just being a car salesman. Both male and female athletes compete at such incredible levels that require physical talent and drive. Professional athletes are known to get paid salaries that reflect their talent and abilities. Regardless of gender, professional athletes are drafted to receive professional pay. However, equal pay for male and female athletes with the same credentials does not occur today. There is a belief that male athletes are worth more than female athletes and are better at promoting themselves. Every day, from almost every company, in every part of the world, millions of men and women receive unequal wages in their day to day careers. Even here in America, with over 77,000 workers ("Workers Paid Hourly Rates" 1), there are drastic differences between ranks. "In 2014, female full-time workers made only 79 cents for every dollar earned by men" ("Equality and Discrimination" 1). However, the diversity occurs not just between men and women, but also between races.
