General Anxiety Disorder: A Brief Summary
A story written by and about a teen named Rachel, describes her experiences finding out that she has general anxiety disorder and how she overcame it today. In her story, she includes that she was struggling with a relationship, school, fall play, musical, and soccer all at once and it was stressful for her. Rachel was a junior high school, at the time of her story, being involved in school and taking challenging courses to help her to become successful in the future. Her first sign that she knew something was wrong was when she was backstage during her fall play’s dress rehearsal. Rachel was thinking about her first, new relationship with her boyfriend, and all of a sudden thought she was inexperienced with relationships, since this was her first relationship, and she thought he was going …show more content…
Rachel went to her parents, at first they thought she was anorexic since she could not keep her food down from being so overwhelmed. She felt misunderstood. “I wanted to eat, I wanted to feel full and healthy, but my body wasn’t letting me.” Things for Rachel got worse and worse, so her parents made her see a psychologist, where the doctor diagnosed her with General Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Things started to look up for Rachel, she learned techniques to help her overcome GAD, but it still wasn’t the place where she wanted to be. So her psychologist recommended her to see a psychiatrist, where he/she can prescribe medication to help her, which it did in the end. After these experiences, Rachel said, “Dealing with my anxiety has been one of the greatest challenges of my life, but I am better, stronger, and more confident person for everything I have gone through. I learned that living a life of fear is not living at all, and while obstacles may arise more than I’d like, there is no problem that I can’t handle. I’ve learned to take some risks and face my challenges head

I did not really understand the deadlines and requirements because I was the only one in this online class. I remember my first anxiety attack vividly, but as if I was outside of my body watching it happen and as if I was in my own body experiencing the attack. It felt like my world was crumbling around me. My chest felt as if an elephant was sitting on my chest and that there was a ball of energy and anxiety in the center of my chest. My mom’s arms were like serpents around me, trying to suffocate me and crush my soul into dust. I started having more and more anxiety attacks and I started to harm myself in worse ways than before. As a preteen, I had severe anger issues and would punch myself, claw at my skin, and rip out my hair because I was so angry. During the summer between freshman and sophomore year in high school, I hardly ate anything. Sometimes I would snack throughout the day but I usually only ate half of my dinner and shut myself in my bedroom. During sophomore year, I started cutting. I never used blades or had intentions to kill myself. I have always feared death. I would just cut deep enough to draw blood. I soon grew to love the burning from the hot water running over it in my shower the next morning. I became obsessed over the feeling of my fingers running over the fresh cuts. My mother thinks that I only cut one time. The time I told her about was real, just not the only one. She was so…

Today was the second session with Erinn Morrison. E.M has been keeping up with her class scheduled feeling more positive and motivated. She only missed one class last week which was Friday at 2pm, due to a slight panic attack which occurred in her Friday at 1pm class. When asked, E.M stated the panic attack was simply due to outside noises (movie playing too loud from next door), which effected her ability to concentrate and finish the test in a timely manner. From this E.M felt more comfortable missing her next class, allowing herself to calm down and talk to her professor about the distractions. I asked E.M how her other classes are going, and if she felt any other panic attacks or concerns with tests and assignments. E.M sighed in relief,…

Like many, I could use this opportunity to brag about my academic or extracurricular achievements, but in doing so I would be omitting a defining factor of my life thus far-anxiety. While not completely aware of it, I have spent a majority of my highschool career in a state of constant anxiety. Similar to others who suffer from generalized anxiety disorder, I am prone to feeling overwhelmed when making decisions or presenting myself in communal settings. As a result, I found myself overwhelmed and struggling with the start of secondary school. My disquieted tendencies made me wary of expanding my comfort zone, in turn stunting my own personal growth over the past few years. Subsequently, I have spent a long time attempting to beat my anxiety.…
