Introduction
“I came through, and I shall return.” That was the famous promise of General Douglas MacArthur to the Philippines before leaving for Australia. When Filipinos come to think of it, there are some who have probably forgotten him or possibly did not know what he did for us at all. Having been given the task to write about the American rule in the Philippines, I have decided to concentrate on writing about what General MacArthur did for the Philippines during World War II. There are two reasons why I have chosen to write about this topic. First of all, I feel that a lot of Filipinos lack knowledge about the man who tried his best to protect their country from destruction. Secondly, as I went through all the events during the American rule, the Second World War intrigued me the most. It had always been one of the most interesting wars that I had ever heard about- especially because it was the worst war our country had ever been involved in. Although I learned about General MacArthur at a very young age, I never completely understood what he had really done for us. As I inquired from people about General Douglas MacArthur, they did not really know anything about him because apparently, he was only known for his famous line, “I shall return.” Being my curious self, I thought to myself that there must
