The blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood to heart and other parts of the body is called arteries. Plaque is made up of fat depositions, cholesterol and other substances found in the blood. Plaque hardens and narrows the arteries, reducing blood flow to the organs like heart and other parts of the body. This can lead heart attack. Atherosclerosis affects arteries in the body, including arteries in the heart, brain, legs, pelvis and arms. Coronary heart disease (CHD) is also known as coronary artery disease, occurs when plaque builds up in the coronary arteries. These arteries supply oxygenated blood to heart. Coronary Heart Disease can lead to chest pain (angina) and heart …show more content…
Angioplasty widens narrowed or blocked arteries and enables normal blood flow to heart muscle. This procedure is done by introducing a catheter (thin tube) through a small puncture in an arm or leg artery to the heart. The narrowed artery is opened by inflating a tiny balloon in it. As depicted in Fig. 2, the procedure is simple
• Through a small a surgical cut made in the artery, a Teflon-coated catheter (thin tube) is inserted and threaded to the vessel obstruction.
• A flexible thin wire is moved in the guiding catheter beyond the afflicted Area.
• A balloon catheter positioned in the blockage by moving over the guide wire.
• The balloon is inflated which is mounted in between artery
