Genetically Modified Organisms, GMOs for short, are one of the most important issues in the world today. GMOs are special organisms in which the genetic material has been altered for improvement productivity and product quality. GMOs have raised concerns over their usefulness in that they are resistant to disease, produce greater yields, and improve the nutrition of foods. It is very important to maintain human health by having healthy food, and GMOs are jeopardizing that. In order to protect the well being of the human race, we must stop the use of GMOs. Some reasons GMOs are harming us are first; transgenic crops lead to serious destruction of the environment and have contaminated organic crops. Second, major companies, which work closely with GMO farms, intend to monopolize market foods. Finally, to prevent GMO, it should be labeled and people should be recognized how dangerous GMO for us.
Transgenic crops have destroyed our environment and organic farming industry by contaminating organic foods. Supporters of GMOs argue that transgenic crops are resistance to harmful insects and herbicides helping to reduce the environmental contamination. However, the resistance genes injected to the crops could easily spread to the ecological system. Also GMO pollution caused by pollen drift is spreading in GM crops cultivation areas such as the USA and Canada. GMO contamination will occur once GM crops are cultivated. Therefore, the co-existence between GMO farming and conventional farming or organic farming is very difficult. BBC News reported the result of a study conducted by the UK-based National Pollen Research in 1999. The result showed that airborne GM pollen can be carried hundreds of kilometers in 24 hours, and the pollen was found 4.5 km from a field of GM oilseed in Oxford. If not stopped genetic pollution will destroy organic farming industry, which care and love pesticide-free, GMO free vegetables for citizens.
