For the past 25 years the United States has been putting their people in harm's way. They have been doing this by allowing government agencies to grow and sell genetically modified foods and organisms to the public without informing them of what they're consuming (2011 responsibletechnology.org). Most people do not know that a large quantity of the foods they are eating are not natural and are actually mutations of real healthy foods that take tons of chemicals and pesticides to create. Americans and their environment are being put in harm’s way due to government agencies letting detrimental chemicals be used without proper regulation to make genetically modified foods (2015 galegroup.com). needs to put labels on all foods that are genetically modified and create new jobs to ensure more secure regulation of chemicals going into the environment to keep the planet and other animals safe.
Genetically modified foods are putting people in danger due to the harmful short term and long term effects it has on human health.
Since 1996 when genetically modified foods were introduced the rate of chronic illness almost doubled in just nine years (2015 galegroup.com). In just twelve years 383 million pounds of extra herbicides were sprayed onto crop. Since there is an extreme amount of herbicides being used the amount of toxins and residues has raised significantly. This poses a huge health threat considering some side effects include birth defects and cancer (2011 responsibletechnology.org). Currently it is impossible to tell if the food consumed by an individual is genetically modified due to the lack of regulation by the Food and Drug Administration not requiring any labels on these foods. The government needs to begin labeling these foods with stickers like they do with fruits and vegetables so people can protect themselves and future generations from these dangerous …show more content…
foods.
Not only are genetically modified foods and organism dangerous to human health but they are even more to the environment. The 383 millions pounds of extra herbicides being sprayed by farmers in the United States has had a huge negative effect on the environment (2011 responsibletechnology.org). The government has been surprisingly nonchalant towards this problem. They have fake regulations to make it appear like all safety precautions have been taken. In fact the Food and Drug Administration does not require any safety studies (2015 galegroup.com). The United States government needs to take immediate action and begin in-depth research on how the environment is affected. This will open up jobs for the many unemployed and in the long run will only have a positive outcome for the future of the planet.
The effects on the environment are so significant that it is killing insects and animals that are essential for the survival of human life. The herbicides on the crops are being consumed by all insects including honeybees the most important. Honeybees are the most important pollinator and without them there is no way to grow food (2014 organicconsumers.org). This clearly poses a huge threat not only to other animals in the short term but human life in the long term. The government and researchers need to find a way to regulate the amount of herbicides and pesticides being or else this planet will face the ultimate price.
It is clear that genetically modified foods and organisms are beyond dangerous to humans, animals, and the environment.
The evidence is so apparent the government has no other choice but to take immediate action. There needs to be research done to find a safe way to use genetically modified organism or there needs to be a band. The Food and Drug Administration needs to put labels on all genetically modified foods to ensure that American people really know exactly what they are consuming. Finally, real regulations need to be put into place to guarantee that unwarranted chemicals like herbicides and pesticides are not being used so aggressively and killing bees and eventually killing animals all the way up the food chain. In the future if the United States wants to protect their people and future generations they will immediately begin research and put tight regulations on genetically modified food and
organisms.
